Something to think about.

If you fire a subsonic airgun that is perfectly level with the ground in still air, and at the same time drop an identical pellet on to the ground, which would hit the ground first?

A, The rifle pellet?
B, The dropped pellet?
C, Both at the same time?

Answer Later

Al

Not counting for curvature of the Earth, they should both hit at the same time. Is the pellet being spun by rifling? An asymmetrical pellet could begin to yaw at long ranges from the rifling.

I think for all knit picking purposes, a round ball should be used.

Theoretically both at the same time. However under real world conditions I'd say the dropped pellet would hit first

Okay...maybe I'm over analyzing it...pretty normal for me... Rolling Eyes but what if your a real tall guy like myself...even if you shoot parallel to the ground wouldn't the pellet be in the air just a fraction longer.... Shrug

It doesn’t matter what the shape or weight of the pellet, or what height you drop or shoot it from. They still both hit the ground together, the gravitational pull on each is the same.

The limit on the speed of the pellet is because if it was unlimited then escape velocity could be reached, and you would never see it again. Razz

Who are myth busters a drag act? I did see once the Andrews Sisters. Mr. Green

A popular myth about Newton discovering gravity when an apple fell on his head. Actually, he was home on break from college (Trinity College in Cambridge was closed due to the plague). Since Cancun hadn't been invented yet, he just sat around and thought stuff up. Relaxing things like calculus, optics, and gravitation.

There wasn’t an Apple? You have just destroyed my illusion of Sir Isaac. Damm!

A little known fact is that there was an apple, but it didn't fall out of a tree. A neighbor down the road (Henry Witherdick-Smythe) had just shot the apple from a cannon while at the same time dropping one to the ground. Newton intercepted and ate the apple, thus preventing Witherdick from publishing his results. Newton could see that both apples were going to hit the ground at the same time, so he stole the idea and published in Principia in 1687. Witherdick-Smythe went back to his job as chamber pot repairman.

How's that for getting back on-topic?
