Found these on pyramidair.com. I always hear people talking about using heavier pellets for longer ranges. Eun Jin .177 16.1G. My question is will these work in any gun, or are they to heavy for a Quest 1000

My guess is yes, they may even cause spring damage.... You would only get 500-550 fps with it....

I was wondering if these would be more suited to a PCP then a springer. Im going to stay around 7.5g-11.0g for my pellet choices.

from what I know (which isn't really a lot Neutral ) heavier pellets are more well suited for PCP and CO2 AG's

Don't heavy pellets make for a better build up of pressure or something along that line?

I was always told that I should shoot heavy pellets in my .177 magnum springers. Neutral

Piston slam with light pellets is pretty intuitive; what would be the mechanism whereby an ultra heavy pellet would damage the spring? I have read that elsewhere, but I don't understand the physics involved.

I have to admit, I just repeated what I had read, here.... Embarassed

You're right, I can think of no reason a heavy pellet could damage a spring.... on the other hand, I have first hand experience with light pellets ruining the firing cycle bigtime.... My Phantom/Quest really disliked anything under 13.5 grains.... Shocked

Sorry for shooting from the lip, there.... don't know what I was thinking....

OK, I wasn't thinking.... Rolling Eyes

On the other hand, he was looking for pellets for "long range".... In a Quest where they might hit 550 fps at best.... they would have a real rainbow of a trajectory.... so not a good choice for "long range"....

i sent my gamo 440 in for a respring back in the 90's under warranty and gamo told me heavy pellets can cause excessive spring wear... Question

but who wants to believe gamo.... Rolling Eyes

I wasn't questioning the validity of your argument, since I also had read it elsewhere. This is what I read (by Charliedatuna in the "do's and don'ts section of his site):
"They can cause damage and spring fatigue beginning with just a few shots and when disassembled, the damage caused by heavy pellets and detonation is easily detected and identifiable." He doesn't supply any explanation, except for mentioning heavy pellets and detonation in the same sentence.

On the other hand, you have Tom Gaylord, who says this:
"Some people feel heavy pellets also damage mainsprings. I don't believe this myself, but as I said, there isn't much to go on."
http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2006/02/best-pellets-for-diana-rws-52-how-to.html

and..

"Heavy pellets will not damage a mainspring, but I think very lightweight ones might."
http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2006/04/can-you-keep-clean-barrel-with-crosman.html

Gaylord asserts that using heavy pellets will have consequences in accuracy and efficiency. Accuracy because a heavy pellet is longer, and therefore might not be matched to the twist rate of a barrel meant for shorter pellets. Efficiency because of "piston bounce."
http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2006/09/piston-bounce-when-is-pellet-just.html

With a very light pellet, the pellet starts moving before the piston reaches the end of the cylinder, and less pressure is developed. With a very heavy pellet the piston bounces off a cushion of air before the pellet starts moving, so when the pellet moves it does so under less pressure. Somewhere in the middle is the ideal (most efficient) pellet that moves just as the piston reaches the end of its stroke.

It seems to me that with either the ideal or the heavy pellet, the maximum pressure (and therefore temperature) would be the same, so the risk of dieseling ("detonation") would be the same.

Bob, I agree completely about the "rainbow" trajectory of a very heavy pellet.

So if you made it this far, what's my point? Like always, you try different pellets until you find one with the accuracy/efficiency to do the job intended.

Eu Jins, best suited for the PCP airguns, from my understanding.

I've got a post from Russ Best, dated back in 2002, which stated :

"In .177 stay between 7.3 and 9 grains
In .22, stay between 11 and 15.5 grains"

as mentioned, piston slam, toasting seals, etc. is mentioned. He works on 'em, I don't.
