| A daisy is NOT powerful enough to hunt with. You are full of it. Anything under 6ft lbs AT THE TARGET with a smoothbore is not powerful enough to hunt with. I've probably been doing this a lot longer than you have, and I definitely know more about airguns. No daisy brand air rifle is p0werful enough to hunt with. Now if you want to talk the winchester break-barrels that are made by daisy, that's a different story. There is no way you are going to get 6 ft lbs at the target with a daisy. If it was accurate for a brain shot at that distance it would be different. Then you could go down to 4 ft lbs at the target NOT AT THE BARREL. But can you hit a target the size of a dime at 25 yards with a daisy? Nope. I can consistently with my Titan, but I don't have to worry about the dime sized shot when I have more than enough FPE to do a heart-lung at 25 and have the shock value to knock him right out of the tree. I have 16 FPE at 25 yards with .22 caliber. I know I'm going home with meat. All you are going to do is would a bunch of poor animals with a cheap a$$ daisy. Buy a real gun, not a k-mart toy. |

NOT SMOOTHBORE. NOT A POWDER BURNER. AN AIR GUN. YES 9.5FPE WITH A RIFLED BARREL AND OVER 7FPE OUT TO 40 YARDS IS ENOUGH TO HUNT WITH. The Daisy is a pellet gun NOT A BB GUN.
And yes with the correct pellet the Daisy 880 will produce over 9.5FPE with out modification (mine has been power modded and can do a lot better than that).
Though it will do great for taking anything up to rabbit inside of 25 yards. With 9.5FPE and a pellet wieghing 9.68 grain, with a ballistic Coefficient of 0.024 (like I use), you will have over 7.6FPE at 25 yards, and over 6.5FPE at 40 yards, that is way more than enough for hunting anything up to Rabbit.
As to your concern of accuracy the daisy is more accurate than I so yes I can keep dime sized groups out to 25 yards. You have to be that accurate with any Air Gun that you hunt with, no matter how powerful. Ok you usualy have to tape the barrel on the 880 to fit the shroud better.
I admit that I prefer my power modded 16.3FPE Crosman 2289 .22 cal, though the Daisy 880 will do the job.
Based on your responses I must assume that you are more comfortable with Powder burners than Airguns, is this correct? Air guns are a different game.
So please stop propagating false information. |

I have been hunting with Airguns since 1986(before they outlawed it in many areas, now they are again allowing it). I do not know how long it has been for you.
Your statements show that while you may know a bit about about the springers you shoot, you do not know much about the Daisy 880. The Daisy 880 is NOT a toy, it is an adult Air Gun, and identicle in power, and internal design to the Winchester 77x hunting riffle.
No ofence, though you do not know this particular gun. |

| I believe the "rule" is typically 1fpe per pound of game. If the 880 can get to 9fpe, theoretically it should be able to take down a rabbit- but that is dependent of if it's still retaining that 9fpe at the target- ? |

As stated above it will deliver 7.6FPE to 25 yards (the limit of where I personally hunt) and that will take any rabbit I have seen. It will deliver 6.5FPE out to 40 yards which is still enough to take rabbit, if you are comfortable with hitting a half inch target at that distance (not me, I can hit the target, though I am not comfortable enough to take the kill). |

No matter what you want to do to try to sugar-coat it, it's still a daisy and it was not designed to be powerful enough to hunt. My titan is NOT a powder burner, it's a gas ram .22 that makes 21 fpe stock at the barrel. If you want to try to compare knock down power, then I am willing to step up. I can take a head shot with a 18 grain pellet and stop anything short of a raccoon. Usually when I take a head shot there is not much of the head left with a hollow point pellet. I still stand by my original statement. THe 880 is a cheap toy. I don't care how accurate it is, there just isn't enough of a safety margin at the target to safely take game animals. Oh BTW, I looked it up. I was right. it's a 39.00 cheap kid's toy. I also looked at a pdf of the internals of the gun. cheap. When you get real metal parts in your so-called gun, we will talk. WHen the plastic stock is held on by more than one screw embedded in plastic, I will quit laughing. DOn't get me wrong. I have nothing wrong against pump up guns. I have a benjamin 392 that I've had since I was a kid and it still shoots like a top and it's taken plenty of it's share of rabbit and squirrel. But it's also a .22 and a real gun.
But come on, 661 f.p.s. out of a 7.9 grain pellet? THe fpe on that is 7.666302194385217 and that is Daisy specs my friend. A far cry from what you are claiming. There is no way you are getting 9.5 out of a 10.1 grain, and if you are I want to see the chrono numbers. I can claim I'm geting 25 FPE out of my phantom. But without any chrono numbers, it's just a claim. THis whole post is |

| BTW I don't even own a powder burner and if you accuse me of false info again, I will bury you with facts right from this forum. Don't push me little boy. I have been into airguns since webley and scott was top of the line. At least you do show a ;itt;e sense by owning a crosman which a gun capable of hunting with. |

What is wrong with your 880? Try 706FPS with a 7.9 grain =8.7FPE. Though with Winchester 9.68 grain pointed pellets we are talking about 668FPS = just over 9.5FPE, and this is with the stock gun.

If you do not have a chrony:
Record the shot, determine the time between the muzzle pop, and the target impact sound, subtract the time it takes the sound to reach the microphone from both, and know the distance to target. Then you can get the speed. To get as accurate as possible I use known BC pellets, and use targets at 6 feet and 12 feet from the muzzle, and then just do the simple math.
And I have verified this against a real Chrony and it is accurate. |

@oddtodd:
And you keep saying "it is a daisy", as if that is bad. The 880 is an adult hunting MSP. |

Daisy lists the specs on the 880 as 750fps, and up until the last couple years, Daisy was pretty good about publishing accurate numbers. That being said, the last 2 years or so, they have been "exaggerating" the numbers somewhat for marketing.
That being said, if it shoots, realistically, 7.9gr at 650fps, that is over 7fpe. I am always a bit wary of the low-power numbers being able to stick to the "1 fpe per pound" rule- no one would try to shoot a 1 pound bird with a 1 fpe gun. Really, I would suggest from any point of view, nothing should be shot with a gun outputting less than around 4-5fpe. |

Well if it were that low of power I would not recomend it either, though it is real world more than 700FPS with 7.9 grain. And with heavier pellets over 9.5FPE. |

| If you go to daisy.com, click on the 880, then go to specs it says 661 fps with a pellet. if that is the 7.9 grain daisy pellet, then you are far more willing to risk wounding an animal than I am. I'm not saying any more except I still consider a daisy a cheap junk rifle and nothing anyone will say will ever change my mind. They can't even be bothered to use a metal receiver. At least I know you have an 2289 and aren't as likely to wound animals with it due to it's larger caliber and higher FPE at the target. I only own one magnum airgun and that is a beeman elkhorn in .22 It's a beast to shoot which is why I only use it for crow. But I still have a better safety margin with crow than you do with rabbit. |

Well that is not what mine shoots, and mine is a new one. Also in the manual (download the PDF and look) it claims 715FPS for pellets, and 750 for BBs (I do not shoot BBs). And I must say that 715 is a realistic number with this gun with 7.4 grain Daisy pellets.
And with Winchester Pointed 9.68 grain pellets it will produce 9.5FPE, way more than enough to hunt rabbit out past 25 yards, 7.8FPE at 25 yards. I stay with in 25 yards regardless of how powerful a gun I use.

You are entitled to your opinion. And I would never hunt with something that does not have the power to do it well. I still maintain that the Daisy 880 is good for that job up to Rabbit.
So if you admit to being purely anti brand to Daisy, then please stop bad mouthing the gun, with wrong info.

Well the actual pellet channel in the breech in the receiver is metal. And the plastic on the gun is well done. Yes it has a lot of plastic.

I do prefer hunting with the 2289, that is just because the .22 gives a bigger wound channel and thus slightly more forgiving.

I do not like guns like that. And there is ZERO safety margin regardless of power. You should place the shot as perfect with your higher power guns as I do with my lower power guns PERIOD.
I respect that we each have our own experience, though I have only one time in my entire life wounded an animal. Every other time has been a clean kill, as I learned from the one to never take the shot unless 100% sure of a clean kill. |
