Hello all,

I use to have a pistol before but I sold it. I want to get into rifle. I was wondering, what would be a beginner rifle that is accurate and also serves a good starting point?

Thanks in advance.

For 10 meter I don't think you can go wrong with the 853. Thumb Up! v2

I don't plan to hunt. So it would be target practice, general plinking and competition.

any other suggestions ?

Thanks.

4H, Boy Scouts, JROTC, Canadian Sea Cadets, et. al. use the 853. I have one. It's quiet, accurate, easy to use, and somewhat adjustable. It only shoots at about 500 FPS, but it's perfect for 10m paper punching. The Daisy 953 is the same gun without the Lothar Walther barrel at half the price.

I picked my 853 up on Gun Broker for under $100.
The 953 I had was almost as accurate as the 853. One option is to buy the 953 then order an 853C barrel from Daisy and you have a synthetic stocked 853 for quite a bit cheaper than the wood stocked version. Here is a link to when I did mine..... http://www.airgunone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4417&highlight=953+barrel

wow thats a great idea, but there are no 853s available on gunbroker currently that are that cheap.

I was looking at this one:

with the target sights.

That 953 is the same as the one I bought a few years ago. Mine didn't have target sights though. I see the price has increased about $25 since I bought mine http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Daisy_Powerline_953_TargetPro/585
With the stock 953 barrel I could hit the 1/4" bullseye 20 out of 20 times consistently. The 853 barrel wasn't a huge improvement but was worth doing, at the time I was shooting a 10 yard bench rest match pretty regular and the barrel upgrade got me a few more Xs'.
The CMP 853s are only sold to clubs that are affiliated with the CMP 4H, boyscouts and such so you would have to know someone to get in on the $100 853s from them. Or get the 953 and keep an eye out on Gunbroker. Thats what I did Thumb Up!

There is a monthly match here on AGH.
It wont take much to stop the pellets from a 953, a cardboard box with a few layers of carpet remnants, news paper, a phone book.....
My pellet trap is made of plywood with a metal plate in the back. There are plenty of plans available on line. If you want to buy one Archer airguns sells them http://www.archerairguns.com/airgun-pellet-trap-s/6.htm.
Might want to get a tin of these pellets to try out http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/RWS_Meisterkugeln_Pistol_177_Cal_7_0_Grains_Wadcutter_500ct/219
I had good luck with them and for a few dollars more these were my favorite http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/RWS_R_10_Match_Pistol_177_Cal_7_0_Grains_Wadcutter_500ct/215

I agree with the 853, I'm a 4-H instructor, and this is what we start the kids out with. Also if you order it form CMP you can choose between the Sporter stock, or the Monte Carlo.

Casey

P.S. CMP does re-seal, and check each used rifle before they ship them, also, a full rebuild kit is around $8.00 - $12.00 I don't remember exactly, but I called them and it was at my door two or three days later. Same thing with CMP, once they had my order the rifle shipped, and I had it in 2-3 days. Bought it for my daughter to shoot on the team with. Cost a lot less than an Air Force Edge, or the Air Arms T200

I built a trap using a metal electrical box and only 4 lbs of duct seal. The duct seal only covers 8.5 x 11 inches, which is the size of targets I print. It works fine for a low MV gun like the 853/953, but isn't adequate for a spring gun. It is easy to pick out the pellets with a tweezers, and then smooth out the surface for the next round.

I saw one that looks easier and better for a whole range of guns. It uses rubber mulch. Check it out at Ted's holdover blog: http://tedsholdover.com/ It's further down the page.

I'll add another second to the Daisy X53 series. I've got a couple vintage Daisy Powerlines, 853 and 953, both with original LW barrels. They are way better than I'll ever be.
I ordered a monte carlo stock from the CMP for the first one, and added a fancy diopter sight that Daisy puts on the 753. it is a joy to shoot.
