A quick and dirty technique:
My father in-law bought a Remington 511 at a garage sale, and I was having one heck of a time making out the markings. (bless me father for I have sinned - but we're talking stampings here, not powder.) Between the dirt and rust I couldn't tell if it had stamped letters or dings from use. The magnifying glass didn't help. The daughter's young eyes didn't help.
I took a photograph of it with the camera set to the most extreme closeup it was capable of. Lighting was with a flashlight held at about 45 degrees to create shadows. Then I used my photo editor to play with cropping, sharpness, contrast, brightness, etc. until I could read the letters:
The 511 sold for $11.00 USD in 1939, and the markings tell me this one was made in September, 1945. Grandpa is kind of a wheeler-dealer, and I can't wait to tell him he paid more than new retail for his garage sale find.
Try this the next time you have trouble reading things; it might help. |

| That symbol on the far right looks familiar and the numbers / letters look a lil hebrewish to me, but I am no expert. |

Sort of related.... maybe.... I have tried photographing serial numbers on air guns before and not had much luck until I stumbled across this trick, Rub some chalk across the stamped numbers, wipe off the excess and the numbers are much more visible in the pic. It is easily removed afterwards.

Some of those odd markings are proof codes. I was interested in the date of manufacture, which is the "DPP" code (September of 1945).

On another tangent, I used a related technique to renew the markings on my Mendoza rear sight. I degreased, painted with white latex, and rubbed off the extra with a pencil eraser. |
