I know, I know--- Chinese S2's are POS guns for any real shooting. I have one that i got for $25 off Amazon, in .22. Inconsistent, shoots higher than a black powder Navy Colt with the sights as low as they will go. We're having a cold snap in New Mexico, and I decided to take mine apart and see if there was anything I could do for it. Not much, as it turned out. Cleaned out the yak butter with automotive degreaser, and was trying to clean the port passage with a pipe cleaner, when I discovered it was over half blocked at the cylinder end.
Apparently they just drilled through from the breach to the cylinder and called it even. Since the passage from the breach to the center of the cylinder is at an angle, there was some serious burring at the cylinder end that just got mashed back into the passage by the cylinder. Since I had it apart, I found a drill bit the right size and reamed out the passage. Then I got a 1/2" drill and gave it a couple of turns on the inside to completely de-burr the hole. I've heard tales of these guns not even being able to push a pellet through the barrel right out of the box--- I wonder if this has been the problem?
Anyway, I also noticed the piston casting was really rough inside, where the spring rests. I had some 5/8" stainless washers (mine have neoprene seals bonded on one side) so I dropped one into the piston. The piston seal is synthetic, press-fit to the top of the piston with a plastic post that sticks up a bit in the piston. The washer fits over the post and gives the spring a smooth surface to push against.
The cylinder and outside of the piston were actually pretty smooth, so I just lubed the piston and spring with moly/lithium, plus a little bit on the sliding pin on the cocking arm. I've only shot it 25-30 times, using cheap Chinese pellets, but it's noticeably smoother to cock and shoot. I'd doubt the performance improved more than a little, as far as power--- couldn't really tell. Anyway, for those of you who have one of these POS, and have some time, now you can have a somewhat polished POS!
By the way, if you drill out the pin and just take the rear sight off, the "ears" that it mounted to make a serviceable fixed rear sight--- and it won't shoot too high anymore, either! |
