i currently own a remington vantage 1200-.177
i am using CROSMAN PREMIER HOLLOW Points 7.9g
i was just curious to see if any one could give me a closer fps
clearly its not shooting at the "advertised" 1200-1000fps

the answer will greatly help me for mildot sighting and bullet drop.
i like to use it at a variety of distances on the fly for target shooting
using the hawkes ballistics program

also wondering if any one had any advice or fun projects that they have done
to increase accuracy or mods to trigger pull

looking to get a chrony eventally but first im saving to get the
Benjamin Marauder .22cal extreme package off pyramydair. Laughing
thanks for your time any actual chrony data much apreciated

Welcome to the forum!

With average weight .177 pellets (like 7.4 to 7.9 grain lead pellets) it should typically shoot roughly 900 to 950 fps muzzle velocity.
This velocity range is approaching the limit of accuracy anyway, because when a typical airgun pellet gets nearer to the speed of sound, they can tumble and fly all over the place. When the rifle is new, there can be oil vapor inside the piston chamber that explodes from the heat of compression when fired, and they may go significantly faster for a while, but it is hard on the gun and messes up accuracy. (That is called dieseling.)

Clean it well and gently when it's new, and keep oil out of the air transfer port from the receiver to the barrel and the piston/cylinder area, and break it in with shooting. Try different pellets until you find some it shoots accurately with (airguns are picky).

When you try a different pellet, shoot 10 or so of the new kind before you judge accuracy, because the barrel needs to condition itself to any change in pellets.

Practice holding the rifle loosely and consistently while squeezing the trigger, because powerful spring/air rifles recoil complexly before the pellet even leaves the barrel, and holding it loosely (look up "artillery hold") allows the rifle to recoil freely and the same way each time, before the pellet is on its way. These rifles are pretty powerful and can be quite accurate right out of the box (after some break-in shooting at least a couple hundred shots--and especially with a trigger upgrade) if you let her recoil...and practice.

You would probably like this trigger, I believe it fits that model:

The Vantage is what is called a B18/B19 pattern. A lot of brands use this pattern from the same maker with minor variations, so it's easy to find parts and modifications for it...especially if you search the internet and forums under B18 and/or B19 air rifle.

Read the manual, and be safe.

Rob

As radar has pointed out "advertised" numbers and "real" numbers are radically different.

Note on the Crosman website the comments they list alongside the velocity numbers; "using alloy pellets" and "up to xxx fps".

Tricky wording- but I guess technically not a lie. Gamo is the worst for this as they don't even try to "qualify" their numbers with the "alloy pellets" and "up to" statements.

Radar is correct in that a .177 version of this platform will achieve around 900fps using 7.9gr pellets- 950fps is even pushing it.

I'd say "I care."

But I'd be lying.

Gamo is the worst in my experience too. My long gone Shadow 1000 was about an 845 fps gun. It was an OK, useable gun and I killed a lot of pesky squirrels and rabbits with it, but when I chronied it, I was flabbergasted. (Is that how you spell flabbergasted? LOL)
Later I learned that was typical BS and to just shoot the thing and if it does the job, it does the job.

haha my big cat in 22 says on the reciever it gets 950 with pba . it does mabe 835 850 with cphps and anything printed or writen about speed is pure bs . a rule of thumb is if they claim say 900 reduce it by 150 and it will be more truthful. and remember p.b.a. means piston breaking alloys

Welcome to the forum, Deadkingg13.

Since you already have the Hawke software, try this: Zero the rifle at 25 yards, and then shoot another group at 50 yards. Find the group centers, and measure the drop. Look up a published ballistic coefficient for your pellet, and plug the numbers into the software. Then play around with different muzzle velocities until the program displays the same drop that you experienced in the real world. It won't be exact, but it may be better than a guess.

There are a couple of sources for replacement triggers that have proven themselves:

http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/

A lot of Crosman, Remington, and Benjamin guns have been built as variants of that B18/19 platform. When you look at the list of guns that the replacement triggers will fit you will see all the different names. As you search this site and the web in general for mods, keep in mind that mods to any of those models will work with yours. This is a project that I did with a Crosman G1, also a B18 variant:

thank you guys for all the support. ill be looking into the triggers and the poi drop makes sense as a way to find the velocity seeing as i know all the other factors, (at least for a rough estimate)
probably use the same principal to help my buddy with his gamo varmint hunter hp. the rifle is nice but i think its to much for the 7.9g pellets told him he needs to get heavier pellets to help slow them down exiting the barrel to reduce spiraling. thanks again and so glad to join!!!
