Really beautiful work, Al. But where are the bottle opener, barbed wire snipper, and especially - the tea maker?

O.K., just watch. Al's next post will have all those things, and they will be elegant.

I’ve finally got it finished and took it out for a couple of hours shooting this morning, I had already zeroed it in at 20m for use with the red dot sight and was getting ½” groups from a bench rest, the out put is around 9fpe for now.

I find it a very stable platform and it shoots better than when it was a standard QB, I did always have trouble with this barrel and had already chopped three bits off it, trying to get it to shoot better but this last chop down to 16” seems to have sorted it out, the trigger feels no different to the normal one and is very smooth. All in all I’m very pleased with the outcome, there is just one thing I may change at a later date and that is the weight 4.034Kg which is very much the same as the original SA80, a lot of this is made up of the 16g steel side plates, I will probably change this to aluminium sometime.

Plus add a TeaPot etc. Mr. Green

The action fitted into the mainframe of the gun

The action is held in the frame bu three screws

All the bits are fitted into the stock and ready for the
face plate to be fitted.

The connection to the QB trigger is by a rod
which goes directly to the new trigger

Fitted with a large silencer to compensate
for the shorter barrel

Fitted with the standard muzzel flash

Loading Cap inside the forestock

The bolt unit

The othe side with cheek rest

Al

Great job Al, I am loving it. Is that a solid rod of aluminum for the trigger linkage?

And whats up with the airsoft guns? Man I have seen a few of them that are just fantastic design and built like tanks.

Yes the connecting rod is aluminium with an adjusting screw on one end, I did try a steel connecting rod, but found out that if you banged the butt on the floor the weight of the rod fired the gun, not very satisfactory.

As for Airsoft there’s nothing wrong with them it’s just that a good SA80 costs around $600.00 over here and a broken one which is what I wanted costs around $350.00. And all I wanted was a few cosmetic bits, so in the end I had to make everything and that takes time.

The whole thing is in bits at the moment I have to loose some weight off of it, humping 9lb of gun around for a couple of hours is no fun, so I am replacing the side plates with aluminium and reduce the weigh of the sight support. I recon it should remove 2lb off the weight.

Al

Hi Ern
I’m not sure what’s next, I went down to the local gun shop the other day to buy something but couldn’t see anything I fancied, in the end I came home with a new camera. Smile

I had a word with a mate in the local ARU and provided I don’t go running around the streets like a demented idiot there is no problem, provided the gun compiles with the air gun laws it can look like anything you like.

Cheers

Al

The concept and execution are pretty cool, but what impresses me most are your engineering solutions. These are not just analogues of an existant part, made bigger or prettier. Things like the straight pull bolt, the trigger linkage, the end cap, and hiding the original trigger all required a new function and new design constraints. Your solutions are elegant, and as if that weren't enough - beautifully made. I think they lost a hell of an engineer when you retired.

Thank you Slavia for those kind words very much appreciated, It’s something I have been doing all my life so I suppose that helps.

I remember starting work as an apprentice in an engineering factory 55 years ago, ( Pause for Violins ) and the first job I was given was shortening screws, and the other day I was doing the same thing for the side plates screws for this gun, and thinking to myself, here I am after all these years shortening screws again and I still hate doing it, but I’m better at it these days. Smile

PS: I forgot to post this photo of the complete trigger linkage.

Hey Al, I love the shot of the gun with that big brake on it. How did you get the X pattern on it and what is it?

Hi Ern

It’s a Silencer/Suppressor, with shortening the barrel you need to turn up the power to get the lost power back. So I made a larger silencer to keep the sound down, it is 8” long and 1.5” dia and contains one expansion chamber and 6 K type baffles, it works very well the noise from the action is louder than the gun report.

The covering is shrink tube rubber this type is used for tennis racquets and fishing rods, it looks nice and kills off any ring from the silencer.

See: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NON-SLIP-40mm-diameter-0-5-m-Black-Heat-Shrink-Tube-Fishing-Rod-Pole-Weave-Grip-/190634550249?pt=UK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL&hash=item2c62b463e9

Thanks Al! That's a great idea, I love the look of it on the brakes. You did an amazing job on that rifle once again as usual.
