Hi guys i'm Craig, I have shot air pistols on and off for a good few years and I currently own a crosman 1377 and i was wondering if i mod this pistol to have a longer barrel and a stock ect ect would this then change its class into and air rifle and not a pistol?
Or if i put a longer barrel on would I need a Fire arms licence?
Ive been thinking about modding it for some time not but the laws in this damn country as so freaking vague its unbelievable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks Smile

I wish I could help you, but I'm under the distinct impression that the "laws" are dependent on the mood of the local constabularies on any given day.

we suffer the same fate here in Canada

Generally, here in canada if the federal registry says 1377=pistol then that's what it is considered forever regardless of modifications

People usually work around this by basing their build on a tube (same tube with a different roll stamped #) thats classed rifle or carbine

It's a shame when the authorities are not under rule of law themselves, when it comes to specific definitions, as seems to be the case when I read the UK airgun forums.

Hi Craig,

I believe the law is that if it started as a pistol it's power was limited to 6 foot pounds. Changing it to a rifle shape doesn't change this so it remains a low power gun.

If you have a look at one if the UK forums you will get a more reliable answer than mine!

Cheers,
Steve

Welcome to AirGunHome Craig, the law in the UK allows pistols up to 6 pounds energy, if you put a fixed shoulder stock on it and the barrel was more than 16" then it would be classed as a rifle and allowed up to 12 pounds energy.

By just fitting a longer barrel you may put the power over the 6 pounds limit for a pistol, as for a firearms licence if you changed it to a rifle and put the power output above 12 pounds energy then you would have to have a licence. Pistols over 6 pounds energy are illegal and you cannot get a licence for them, just 5 years in jail, so be careful.

Just curious; if you have a license are you allowed to use the airguns on your own property?

You are allowed to use airguns on your own property with or without a license, it must not be discharged less than 15m from a public road center, and the pellet must not enter anyone elses property.

Otherwise you can do what you like provided you abide by the maxinum power laws.
