Squirrels, rabbits, possum, crows, starlings and grackles.
I saw on Youtube a guy killed a good size raccoon with one at something like 30 yards, but I probably wouldn't try that. |

^^^That is a good reference.^^^
Untimately, it comes down to the power and accuracy of the .177 rifle with the pellets chosen, the shooting range, and the skill and judgement of the shooter (within reason, of course). I prefer the .22 calibers for hunting these days, but have killed most of the game in my lifetime with a .177 or a .20 (5mm).

Generally,a sufficiently powerful .177 rifle(950-1075 fps) & hard moderately weighted pellet (8-10.5gr) could be used on most game up to a weight of approx. 20-25 lbs dependent on range & shooters skill with shot proper shot placement. The bigger the quarry, the shorter the ideal range. IMO head shots are nice, but heart & lung or spinal shots offer a better target area, less chance of a pellet ricochet off of a hard domed/sloped skull, and less chance of the game being able to run off to far or fast for an effective pursuit.
Tho I have to admit, when I think about it, a .177 pellet can do a lot if its powered by the right gun. And I find myself especially partial to neck shots these days, regardless of size. |

| An often quoted rule-of-thumb is 1 FPE per pound of animal. However, it is as Mod90 said - it all depends on the gun, the ammuniton, the range, the shooter, the shot placement, etc. I have killed rabbits in the garden with a 3 FPE pistol, but never more than 10 yards away. You can find internet references to human fatalities with airguns, although (for a host of reasons) I wouldn't make a career of it. Figure out your own capabilities and move in close enough for an ethical shot. |
