I like doing the tune ups when the rifles are new in the box

+1

But anytime usually better than no time.
You can just shoot the gun as-is, and be happy, but I think a well done tune will make you very happy. And it's fun!

It's something you should absolutely enjoy doing yourself

You can do a "tune up" anytime you like. Of course, if done well, you will have a better shooter- the question really is, when do you want it to shoot better? I know a few people who don't "tune" their guns new until they either find a problem, it needs some work done due to age/wear, or they get a bit bored with it and want to see what more can be done. Really, it's your choice.

That being said, I can go either way- more likely I don't tune a "new" gun these days because I simply don't have the time. This all assumes of course that it's shooting reasonably well out-of-the-box (and 'FYI' there are some guns, that no matter how much 'tuning' is done, will still be pieces of junk- not mentioning any specific products here... b1/b2...).

How many of you guys have done a tune right out-of-the-box and said "Man, am I glad I did this"???

What I'm getting at, is did you find things (dirt, grit, swarf, burrs, etc.) that would have caused damage with even a few shots.... Are there any brands that are immune from this, or is it luck of the draw?.... Based on your experience, what do you do now with a newly purchased gun?....

I'm asking because I always shoot 'em first.... but I'm going to be picking up a B18 chassis soon for a project and am wondering if I should even shoot it to get a baseline before tearing into it....

Bob

Me. Very Happy
A B18/B19 Quest. Shoots like a wet dream compared to my other ditto before I did anything to it.

Bob what I have found is the B18/19's have a fair bit of grit mixed into that brown preservative we all know and love. And I mean a fair bit and it's coarse...looks like a blasting media. I've filtered it out in a coffee filter and posted the pic...somewhere???

But of course everyone knows it's not detrimental to just unpack them and start blaming away. They survive quite nicely.

But I know what the end results are going to be and I know I can do a thorough clean, debur and lube in a little over an hour, an hour and a half if I cut the crown and radius the breach...so I do a fair number of them for friends.

In respect to Bob's situation- why not shoot it "as is" to see how it goes (you know Bob will be ripping it apart in short order anyways). I have never heard of anyone getting a new gun that was so bad they scored the tube so deep they could not hone it out and use a stock seal to get it going again.

I've never personally tuned any part of any rifle I've ever owned.
I find that getting used to a trigger is all part of the fun.
However in saying that, none of the 7 springers i've owned have had junk triggers. My Patriot's is a little heavy, but the whole rifle is built like air-raid bunker, and a lighter trigger would just be weird.
I can achieve sub 25mm groups @ 35+ metres all day long... and I know for certain those groups would be much tighter if I did the whole rolled up towel bench rest thing.
All my shooting is off-hand.
There really is no point to this post, apart from a little banter Exclamation
