Air Gun Home Forum Index » Airgun Smithing » Shot Counter Goto page 1, 2  Next    View previous topic :: View next topic  Shot Counter   Posted: Thu Feb 09, 2012 11:36 am Alstone Moderator & Site Supporter Joined: 01 Mar 2007 Posts: 4139 Location: Linconshire, ENGLAND After trying temperature & pressure gauges I decided to fit a shot counter, as on medium power I get about 50 good shots, so I figured that a counter linked to the trigger would be a handy accessory. In fact it is very good addition as my gun can sit in the cupboard for two or three days at a time, and when I come back to it I can’t remember how much Co2 is left, full, empty or what. Where as by looking at the shot counter I have a good idea how much is left. There is a micro switch in the trigger unit that sends a pulse to the counter, also this is after the gun as fired, so that if you pull the trigger so far and change your mind it doesn’t register a shot. The counter is a cheap tally counter from EBay £0.99p which comes with it own button cell that lasts 2 years, I took the thing apart and made a new front panel and fitted the counter to it. It turns itself off after 20 minute’s and by pressing the large button it turns back on but remembers the count. The small button resets the count. All in all a cheap and easy job. The bi-pod I bought from Hong Kong broke on the swivel, so they sent me another and said don’t bother to send the old on back, so after mending it I now have two. I am also looking at a side lever system for the QB. Once I get it right I rebuild it on one of the new stocks. Todd You can get down counters but I’m not sure why you would want one? I was thinking about fitting a Penny/Cent counter that added up the cost of pellets used, then you could decide whether to carry on shooting or go down to the pub. Although, ( from what he said ) it was a bit of a piss-take. However, if you have enough consistancy in a CO2 gun to count shots upwards, and be satisfied that there is a definite (and identical) number of shots per cartridge, each and every time you swap one out, would not a count down be more logical ?? If the shooter knows for certain exactly how many shots he/she gets from a cartridge, I'm sure 99.99% of them would opt for the count down. If indeed there are inconsistancies, and say for example, you counted upwards to the number of shots the last cartridge gave you, would you pull the trigger again to assertain whether or not it was empty ?? I certainly would. P.S. I'm fairly certain that there is a very very expensive, exclusive PCP out there with a shot-counter. I have chucked out the themperature gauge as I think this pellet counter is a lot more use. I have also altered it a bit, the big button was used for counting manualy, and as the counter has a battery saving program you use it to turn the counter back on, I have found that all you need to do is pull the trigger with the gun uncocked, and it does the same job, plus it goes back to the same count as when it turned off. If I can find a mini panel meter that displays both count and temperature I may put the temperature back. I find the problem with a count down system is that the shot count using Co2 can change with temperature, and the end point would change even with the outside temperature stable. Shooting in winter I get around 50 good shots per fill, in summer it can be up to 70, so you would have a problem choosing the end point. The air rifle you are thinking of is probably a Daystate Air Wolf. it has an amazing array of electronic controls and sensors. It is capable of displaying your preset FPE and FPS, shot count, at ten it bleeps for empty mag plus total counter, it also adjusts the valve to compensate for pressure changers in the air tube, if you set it to 12 fpe it will stay there for every shot. Measuring temperature won't tell you if you have already shot the gun and how much.... it will just tell you that it SHOULD have a decent velocity providing you actually have any CO2 left.... Unfortunately, the shot count is also affected by temperature.... I still think a pressure gauge is the most useful.... It lets you determine if not only the pressure is high enough for your "normal" velocity.... or it you have to crank in the RVA to compensate.... but also if the gun is approaching empty.... JMO....
