I just got myself a colt defender. It's not my first co2 gun but the first descent one I've owned. Is it worth getting a cleaning kit with brushes or just get some of the cleaning pellets?

Do a search on cleaning here.
Get yourself a small aluminum or plastic dowel and some swatches, use some oil, and only clean it every 1000 shots. |

I don't think it needs cleaned at all, unless the accuracy drops off. Personally, I've never cleaned the barrel on any of my BB pistols and they work just fine. Don't use a brush though, as it will scar up the barrel. Stay away form cleaning pellets too. They will clog up a BB pistol.

Perhaps I should have pointed that out- a smoothbore BB gun isn't really in need of cleaning- running the patches through it with oil is more to combat potential oxidation (rust), not because a 'cleaning' is really required.

One thing I do Eric is put a drop of pellgunoil on about every 5th cartridge. I figure that will take care of any rust in the gun.

I had done quite a bit of that in the past, then I started seeing alot more Co2 guns to repair- and the amount of oil in the valves of some guns was quite surprising (and in a couple cases was the only definable "problem" with the gun). Since noting this, I started wondering how much oil really finds its way through the gas path/valve to the actual barrel (?) Some, I'm sure, but I always figured an oily patch through the barrel can't hurt anything- and it also forgives my forgetting to put oil on the Co2 caplet regularly.
