Hey burl,
Here's some references why the Dusk has more problems than the Wood.
http://www.amazon.com/Crosman-Nitro-Venom-Rifle-rifle/product-reviews/B004W2JW24/ref=cm_cr_dp_hist_1?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&filterBy=addOneStar
"I researched and waited months before getting this pellet rifle. The scope seems adequate and was easy to install. I loaded and fired off three pellets quickly, trying to get a feel for the rifle. The fourth time I broke the barrel to load a pellet, I broke the stock. Another buyer mentioned the alignment of the spring that breaks the barrel being off. Well, this happened to mine within 10 minutes of owning the rifle. It pushed to the side and ruined the stock. The mechanism won't even engage to allow me to fire a pellet. Literally completely inoperable after three pellets. Maybe I am a glutton for punishment, but I am exchanging it for another identical one. I will update this review when I get the replacement.
Update: All of the defective guns that I have read about were made with the plastic stock. Amazon had an estimated two months to replace my broken pellet rifle, so I went with Pyramid Air and bought one with a wooden stock. I just got it today and put 100+ pellets through it with no problems at all. Everything about it is as hoped (accurate, powerful and quiet). I'm thinking stick with the wood stock and you will have one great pellet rifle. If I don't update again, assume my new wooden stock Crosman Nitro Venom is still in perfect working order. Great product! "
There's more like this, but it comes down to the same thing, broken stock and poor quality control. |

| In my experience, and probably because inspections are going out of fashion, the defect rate in most brands of shooting equipment is about 40-50%. I don't know if it matters what kind you buy these days, almost expect to have to replace the first one. |
