Daisy, model 008 CO2 air pistol reveiw by Flightsimmer.

I've done a lot of research on current BB/Pellet air pistols recently.

What got me started was finding my old Daisy CO2-200 model air pistol
while cleaning out my home. The pistol still works and is in great
shape but I got to wondering how todays air pistols would compare.

For my use I wanted a small compact air pistol that I could drop in
my hip pocket that wouldn't catch on clothing or easily fall out (the
Daisy CO2-200 has a long barrel).

So after all of this research I narrowed down the list to three air
pistols: The Daisy, model 15XT, the Daisy, model 008 and the Colt Defender.

After reading many reveiws on the Daisy 15XT I decided it wasn't for me.

The Daisy model 008 on the other hand looked very promising as did the
Colt Defender but the Daisy 008 would shoot both BB's and pellets and had
a rifled barrel.

So I decided to order the Daisy model 008 with the intention of buying the
Colt defender later. Hey lifes getting shorter so have as much fun as you
can.

I ordered it from Pyramyd Air in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday on the internet,
they of course were closed for the weekend but Tuesday morning FedEx was at
my door with the new pistol.

I must say it is everything that I hoped it would be.
So after reading the manual I loaded it up and proceeded to try it out.

The first shot with pellets, WOW! That has some authority to it and even a
little kick and I hit the can dead on at a little over 20ft. Now I'm really
getting enthused.

So I put up a target board with several targets on it and got out my sand bags
for a steady rest and proceeded to test the accuracy.

Starting with pellets at 10 meters (33.2ft.) I fired off 8 rounds using a 6
o'clock hold, slow and deliberate and got a 1" group just about 1" to the left
of the center of the bullseye. Pretty good I think.

Then I tried the BB's. They shot slightly higher by 1/2"to 1" and roughly 1"
to the left but the grouping was slightly bigger at about 1-1/2". So I am very
pleased with the accuracy and power of this little gem and I'll be able to
correct the point of impact with an exacto knife to the rear sight if I want to.
8/13/11 As an edition to my remarks about the sights, the rear sight is so
easy to replace that some adjustable after-market sight would be a snap to
install if Daisy or someone else decided to make them.

Now to the gun itself.

Much of the gun seems to be made of the same plastic that many of the new breed
of black handguns are (Glock,S&W and others) and it has a subframe which looks
like aluminum. It is totally snag-free. You would probably swear it was a real
firearm so be careful showing it out in public. I wouldn't want you getting shot
by the police over it.

The barrel: I had not seen it mentioned anywhere before but the barrel tube is
roughly 3-7/8" long, it is rifled with a very shallow rifleing that appears to
be very effective. When you look at a fired pellet under a microscope you will
see 6 knife edged groves that do a very good job of holding onto and centering
the pellet in the rotary magizine and the skirt has just a hint of sealing the
gas as it goes down the barrel.

The grip: I have medium sized adult male hands with a 3-1/4" long index finger
measured from the web between the first and second finger and the grip feels
very good and like that of a double stack 9mm, it is very comfortable.

The safety: The safety is on the right side at the top rear of the frame where
a ambidextrious safety would be on a 1911 and it works the same except that you
have to pull back on it and push up at the same time, kind of like a child proof
medicine bottle, you have to do two things at the same time to release it, and
that's a good thing, it means that it won't get accidently swiped off in your
pocket so easily if at all and this is not a defencive pistol so speed drawing
should not be a factor. The safety lever on the left side is fake and just
there for looks. The safety disengages the hammer so that pulling the trigger
has no effect.

The trigger: The trigger is double action only, you must pull a full sweep to
fire the gun. I like that, it means you have to deliberatly pull it to make it
fire and it is very smooth. I measured the trigger pull weight at just over
9 pounds and in my book that's excellent.

The hammer: The hammer is not intended to be used to cock the action even though
it moves back with the trigger pull so don't try. The trigger has to be pulled
for it to fire anyway.

The sights: The sights are the square notch rear and square post front style
with no white dots and are a very good no-snag design, very easy to see even
for my eyes. I may put a touch of white paint on them later.

Loading: Loading the CO2 cartridge is easy. Make sure the safety is on. Now
there is a groved grip strip on the grip back strap on either side, just grab it
and pull back. Now just pull out on the tab at the bottom of left grip panel and
it pops off. Now you can drop in the new CO2 cartridge and hold it in place as you
close the back grip strap and squeeze it untill it closes fully, this takes some
effort, then put the left grip panel back on and your ready to load the eight shot
rotary magizine.
The removeable rotary magazines will hold both BB's or pellets in any combination.
BB's are held in place by a magnet embeded in the center of the nylon or plastic
rotary magazine and pellets are held in by friction. After you load up the rotary
magazine It's ready to insert into the chamber. You do that by pushing up on a
tab above either side of the front of the trigger guard and the barrel assembly
will tilt up allowing access to the loading chamber, just drop the rotary magazine
in on the post with the rachets facing forward and the magnet will hold it in
place, now just close the barrel assembly and your ready to shoot.

I don"t know yet how many shots I can get from a CO2 cartridge because I'm still
on the first one, but it's been two days and over 40 shots so it's obvious that
there is no storage leakdown but from reading other reveiws it seems to be over
80 shots and besides it depends a lot on how fast you shoot and the ambient air temperature.
Velosity seems to be in the 425 fps range for 7.9 gn pellets and 475 fps for 5.1 gn BB's.

All in all I like this gun enough to buy another one instead of the Colt,
"Defender" which only shoots BB's.

As a follow-up, I wanted to mention that it has now been 8 days since I first loaded up a fresh CO2 cylinder in this pistol and it still has a shootable amount of pressure left in it.
May 28, 2012 I have left it sit for 10 months now, I took it out today and shot it with no loss of CO2 at all.
The reason I bring this up is that I have had other air pistols that leaked off pressure during storage and then when I went back to use it again it was empty.
This is a frustrating situation when you keep it on hand for targets of opportunity only to find it out of gas when you need it but this model 008 has passed that test with flying colors as far as I'm concerned.
I have now shot a total of 13 rotory magazines full with the last 4 shots falling off noticeably in power, that's 100 shots out of one CO2 cylinder.
I have now purchased a shooting Chronograph and these are the results:
Pellets, average 391 FPS and BB's average 402 FPS on a fresh CO2 cylinder
I'm as pleased as I can possibly be with this pistol in every way.
