Hi all, new to the board here and I’m looking for some advice on a rifle.
Looking for something in the sub $250 range for target shooting and maybe some light pest control, preferably with a decent scope included. I looked around on the Cabela’s website (only store I could think of around me) a little bit and found some rifles I like the looks of but I have nothing else really to go on. Any help would be appreciated.
The ones I liked:
Winchester Model 1029 - This is probably my favorite of the bunch but it appears to be brand new for 2011 and I can't find any reviews of it.
Remington Summit - One of my friends has this and is the only one I've fired. I like the scope it came with a lot.
GAMO Whisper - I'm leaning away from this one since I've heard their customer service is god awful.
Stoeger X-10

Welcome to the forum.
I bought the Crosman G1 Extreme for $99 at Dick's. It came with a nice scope. It is bone stock with only a couple small trigger and safety adjustments that I made to make them each move more easily.
You can also do a very simple upgrade to the trigger that many G1, Quest and Storm owners have done. GRT III is the name of the aftermarket trigger you can get. It runs $32 shipped. All users of this drop in replacement trigger say it makes all the difference. http://www.charliedatuna.com/GRT-III%20Trigger%20New.htm But all I did was to remove the trigger return spring and this lightened my trigger without the upgrade.
The Rem Summit you mentioned is basically a G1, which is basically a Storm and a Quest as well. Crosman made all these with the same basic innerds.
The Ruger AirHawk is the same principle as well. A lesser expensive gun, but made pretty well to my understanding.
Also, since you will be most punching holes in paper and shooting an occasional tree rat, you can probably get by just fine with .177cal. My G1 is .177 and it takes squirrels in its sleep. But .22cal will work just as well. My main problem with .22 is that I like to buy my pellets locally and they are harder to find than the .177's. If you buy your pellets online, then this won't matter.
A springer is a great way to go, btw. You'll love the single pump of the break-barrel vs a pneumatic pump of a multi-pump gun. Much quicker to put a lot more lead down-range. |

I have a storm XT and the only difference between the storm and the quest is the quest comes with a better scope. Same with the differences with the G1 and the rest of the rifles. The subassembly is the same, they just drop the mechanism into different stocks and fit them with different scopes. They are all decent rifles and they hold up pretty well. It's just a case of how much you want to pay and which style you want. |

I also have the G1, and it's good for the price. The Summit, Vantage, Quest, Storm, Phantom, G1, Tac1, and Sierra are all the same thing as was mentioned, and they all share the same awful trigger. Another source for a replacement trigger is this (scroll down the left to custom triggers-GTX):
http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/
If you look at the compatability list for either trigger you will see that lots of brands share the same design with Crosman. You can also review the installation instructions to convince yourself that the process is really easy.
Besides Cabela's you can also buy online. http://www.pyramydair.com/ is a big supplier, and there are others. You can also go to the Walmart site and have the gun shipped free to your local store for pickup:

| I have had the Quest, Stoeger X-10 and the Storm and IMO the Stoeger X-10 is a much better rifle than the other two. The trigger was very smooth, crisp and broke reliably right out of the box. It is easier to cock than either of the others and I believe is a little more accurate. It is also lighter yet has almost no plastic parts other than trim. |

| On the subject of stoegers though it has been my experience after chrony'ing them for a couple of friends that they really amp up their numbers. More so than the crosman variants |

| As far as I know all the makers use false fps numbers to help increase their numbers and I don't believe the fps numbers are of any value anyway. |

Yeah, to me ft lbs energy is more important than feet per second anyway. I would rather be throwing .22 lead at 800 fps than .177 at 1000 fps. |

When I got my Ruger Blackhawk (the airgun) one of the sellers was trying to sell the Blackhawk and another airgun (a big underlever, according to the seller "more powerfull").
I was asking how much the power the underlever had (knowing that the Blackhawk was rated at about 16 Joule) in front of the customers. The guy said "16 Joule" to which I replied "And how much power does the Blackhawk have?" to which he replied "Could you let me do my job? I'm trying to help these customers."
Good help, when the seller left to pick up another rifle or something else I told those customers they might want to look at either another seller (the guy who sold me the Blackhawk did know what he was talking about) or another rifle.
Stuff pisses me off. |
