I thought about it when I was heavily into shooting with airsoft guns. While GBB handguns like the Tokyo Marui 1911 Govt are accurate and responsive enough, they just lack the punch needed to put hole in hard targets. I was thinking about using the Umarex S&W 6in 586 pellet revolver for pistol shots. What do you guys think? I know it would never be a sport like it is with firearms but it would still be fun. I know difficult shot are possible with airguns as I used to shoot Quarters with a Crosman 760 Pump Master using bbs at about 25 yards.

Back in the '50s and '60's there was a man named Lucky McDaniels who traveled around teaching people how to shoot small targets (dimes, asprins, etc) that were tossed in the air. He used Daisy BB guns with the sights removed. Daisy even made a model maned for him and presumably sold for people wanting to do that with them. Today, Leon Measures sells a book and DVD called "Shoot Where You Look" based on the same sort of method.

I'm sure that if you put in the time practicing with a BB pistol you could do all sorts of fun stuff that would just be insanely unsafe with a 45 or a 22. Pingpong balls in the air, the legendary coin toss shot with a pistol. Why not.

Lucky McDaniels is the person that taught the Army the Quick kill method using that same process. I took that training in the Army and it does work as I got to where I could hit tossed dimes 9 out 0f 10 times with a Daisy BB rifle with no sights.

Won't be purchasing anything by Crosman or Daisy. Haven't had positive results from when I've used them in the recent past. I'm going to need very good quality airguns, and accessories for this hobby. If you guys have any ideas please speak up. I do aready have a Umarex C02 MP5-K PDW that I have read that it's made by RWS. Don't know if I want to use it that much though.

It depends what sort of exhibition shooting you want to do.

What's your overall impression of your Umarex MP-5? I'm getting ready to order one of their Colt 1911 CO2 pistols. My main reason for buying is to practice 'point shooting' or 'instinct shooting', whatever you want to call it. Basicaly the method taught by McDaniels or the Army's Quick Kill program from the '60s. There is a thread on that so I won't beat the horse. Anyway, the Umarex apears to be the airgun closest in feel to the real 1911. I just hope the quality meets my hopes.

What sort of exhibition shooting are you wanting to do? Pistol? Long gun? Thrown targets or something different? My initial thought would be that you want something that looks very close to a real gun, just with a safer projectile path. Is that correct? Also, you probably want a repeater, maybe even semi auto.

Your options are few and far between if you don't want the Crosmans or the Daisies. There is a big jump in price from the low end to the next step and there don't seem to be many options out there that are really made for this sort of thing. I customised a Daisy rifle (removed the sights and made a stock that fit) for practicing the point shooting and it's only OK because it started as a $25 gun. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, after all. So far, so good but I have only really just started practicing seriously. My preference would be to find an original that was made either as the "Lucky McDaniels" model or the actual "Quick Kill" model that was made for the Army, but those are both collectables and are not about to be had in good condition for low money.

As an aside, I don't know what a fair price for one of those special models is, but if anybody has one they may want to sell, let me know. If it's in my reach I'll buy.

The kind of gun you need to practice that type of shooting does not need to be anything special as it is the method not the kind or type of gun. That's why BB guns work so well. My wife has a Beretta PX4 Storm by Umarex that looks and feels very much like the real Beretta PX4 Storm and is quite accurate. She uses it to practice the Quick Kill method. She couldn't use my Crosman 3576 revolver because it is too big for her hand so she got the PX4.

I plan on using both rifle and pistol on a wide range of targets with both moving and stationary. The MP5 is actually one of the nicest and most realistic airguns I've ever seen. I handled the Colt 1911 airgun and you can easily tell it's a quality piece. Plus it's not China Junk. The trigger sucks though.

Being mentally ill, I'm barred from owning a firearm under Federal Law. I know the law is stupid but I'm not risking a 5 year vacation at Club-Fed. You don't have to worry about the noise either. A repeating rifle won't be necessary but a pistol will.

Crosman and Daisy used to be pretty decent but both companies have walked off a cliff in recent years in terms of quality.

The biggest help for you would be get a gun that fit's(your hand for pistol, over all fit for rifle)no matter maker ,an just ton's of practise,it will take a long time to perfect an you WILL wear out the gun's several time's over before you master trick shot's,it can be done but you must put in the time ,ALOT of TIME an energy!!! I can do some fun stuff with a gun but I will never be a showmen, your eye's an hand control(like a baseball major's player)have to be above the normal, all showmen can see a coin's head's an tail's as it flip's in air(like a player see's ball's sticthing's)not many have eye's that good. But Hey Bro. do give it a shot(pun there)& remember the gun most fit you for a natural point of aim.

Excellent point. I'm using a modded Daisy at the moment. I figure getting a 1911 will allow me to use a holster I already have when I start practicing quick kill shooting with the pistol.

Donec, when you took the training did they tech pistol or just rifle?

I used a Daisy Red Rider lever action rifle just like you can buy today at the store and learned to shoot it to hit dimes using both hands like a rifle and one handed like a pistol. By the way it had sights but we were told not to use them just focus on the target.

It's a darn shame Crosman and Daisy don't make products as good as they used too. The Red Rider I had in the late '80s broke rather quick.
