Hey there for all of you new to hunting here are some tips to get you started.
First always make sure you have a gun capable of cleanly killing the desired game. Have a look at the topic "fpe to kill various pests Part 2" to get an idea of the required power you need to kill a game animal.
for your first several hunts go hunting smaller game like squirrel, in my opinion one of the easiest things to hunt. When one sees you they usually get upset and hiss at you but don't usually run away; this may give you a better window of opportunity to shoot the bugger!lol
pigeon
Theses can be fun to hunt, they are a huge pain and will eat from your bird feeder, get some bird seed and scatter it along the ground making sure there is a wide diameter of the scatered seed.
Take a good .22 pellet rifle (helps if you have a strap on it) and climb a tree, or get on an elivated platform the a good distance is about 30 yards give or take... then wait for some pigeons to come if there is a large group aim for the ones furthest away from the group this may allow you to take several before the group flys away. a quiet gun is more effective in this situation as it will not disturb the pther pigeons as much.
Starling
One of the most hated birds, they are an import and take over robins and other beautiful birds homes. i have seen many ways of getting rid of the pests, everything from takin the old bolt action 22 rimfire right into the robin's bird house(when it is inhabited by starlings) and pulling the trigger.
my best advice would be just if you see them hopefuly have a gun and hit them...
rabbit
thses are fun to hunt and good eats. You can hunt them buy a blind(the most boring way) or you can hunt by stocking <------ this is my favorite
this can be done with very little, if any camo, look for little streams and paths that the rabbits would likely use, follow it until you find one and make sure that you are down wind of the rabbit, allthough in my experiance a rabbit does not really bolt if it catches a human scent...
make sure that your shot placement is just behind the ear, but do not go for
long long shots.
woodchucks
MAN they are fun but hard also! When hunting them i find the biggest asset is a dog but for some reason it seems many people no longer do it, (doesnt make sence to me) But lets skip that usualy you will need a long range shot to take one as they live underground and will not come out unless halled a$$ over tea kettle but a terrier, but for hunting these you need a powerful gun at least 9fpe probably more when the groundhog comes out of its hole give it to him! a well placed shot right in the head ought to do it. |
