| My son's been shooting guns for a few years, has had a hunting license for 2 seasons and shoots shotguns, rifles, handguns, etc. He's been surfing around for a good airgun he can use in the back field on varmints, rats, etc. and found a Benjamin Sheridan Super Streak .177 for just under $200 new. So...is this a good deal, is it reliable and who'd got the best deal on airguns? |

Welcome to AGH.
Good rifle, but I feel it would be too large for him.
Also, it is more powerful than a .177 springer should be. The .22 version would be a must.
I recommend a Diana 34. In .177 or .22.
What do you consider a "varmint"? |

He's comfortable with a 12 guage and shoots an "adult" deer rifle, but I'll take a look at the Diana in .22.
I used varmint as a general term -mostly rats and ground squirrels.

An "adult" deer rifle usually weighs less than 8lbs scoped, and is shorter than 45".
If I remember correctly my Super Streak weighs nearly 12lbs scoped and is 52" long.  The Diana 34 is listed at 7.5lbs with no optic, and 45" long.
How close can you actually get to your ground squirrels? You may need to look at a different powerplant (pcp) if the distance is too great. An excellent rifleman should be able to take ground squirrels at 75 yards with a Diana 34, although at that distance the pellet may not have retained enough energy for a humane kill. |
