Sniper... hardballs are what you get when you eat too much iron... they are not for self defense use. C'mon, you know about Hyrdashocks, use them.

Although I would put the last round in the mag as a hardball, just in case you can't get adequate penetration.

We have a dumped/feral cat problem sometimes around here. If it was legal, they'd be gone. Then I'll go pet my cats and tell them how spoiled they are.

I believe the 'rule of thumb' is 1 fpe for every pound the prey weighs.

So, in the case of a 30 pound groundhog- you need a ballpark of 30fpe....

Guess that translates into a 21-22 lb critter kill for my new pistol then... Whooooooot!

My M54 pushes the 14.3 gr CPs out right at 800 fps. The M48 should do so also as it is the same action as the M54. I have not shot a woodchuck or racoon with it but I have shot numerous possums, feral cats and rock chucks (smaller version of the woodchuck) with it. Very careful placement is important. Of course only a head shot will give a reliable and quick kill. The brain must be hit solidly. If you can't get a solid shot into the brain don't shoot. Also I am always ready to shoot 2 - 3 insurance shots. I also like to keep shots on the short side, inside 20 yards. Let's face it, those are pretty large animals for the power level of a pellet rifle and we must choose our shots carefully and eecute them with precision if we are going to shoot such animals with an air rifle.

Quite frankly I will reach for a .22LR these days for dispatching such. If noise is a problem then I use CCI CB Longs. In a longer 24" barreled rifle they are quieter than the M54 and the bullet weights twice as much as the CP at only a little less velocity. The CB Longs are more powerful and it shows on such animals but I am still ready for quick follow up shots. I realise the use of a .22LR may not be legal or adviseable in some locals but where it is it is a much better option. Just my thoughts based on my experience.

I had a rabies outbreak on my farm last year. I had to kill all of my barn cats. Crying or Very sad I also had to kill one of my work dogs due to his coming down with rabies too. That about killed me inside. All 12 cats, and 1 dog. This from raccoons. I kill every raccoon I can find now. I make it a purpose to hang them up in farm equipment too. I make those nasty little bastards die the hard way. BTW if you use a 12 gauge slug it drops a coon right now. Uzi Shooting

I killed a skunk with a russian made air gun. I think it shot like 500 feet per second. .177 pellet. Surprised me. I was not happy. I thought it would just drive it away.

HW90 in .22/.25 makes a good second one if you look at the numbers, and don't forget about the Theo-Eli, if you feel like spending. Wink

Once shot a Pat with a Gas Ram. Rare but oh so nice.
