Some say that they don't need to be cleaned very much, if at all. Others say the opposite. What would be the reasoning for cleaning/ or not? I've also read by unreliable sources that there is a lengthy "breaking-in" period for air rifles before they become consistently accurate. Is this the case?   Posted: Fri Jul 02, 2010 10:00 pm rsterne Moderator Joined: 15 Jan 2008 Posts: 2998 Location: Coalmont, BC Your Airmaster, if I understand correctly, is a "multi-pump pneumatic".... not a spring gun.... It would not take very long to break in but if you do clean the barrel you will face a another break in period.... Cleaning removes any slight lead build-up which is actually smoothing the tiny imperfections in the rifling and puts you back to square one, so to speak.... I've shot around 1200 or so pellets, so I guess I can wait awhile. It was really pretty accurate from the first day or so, especially considering that I've never shot before. I'm really liking this new hobby. Take some weed wacker line, cut off just a bit longer then barrel. Take one end and using a match or lighter melt it a bit so it forms a ball that's a bit smaller then the bore of the barrel, you can use this to push a bit of tissue or the like through. However he is correct that that is the best way and I also never use metal. I bought a wooden dowel from Joann's for about 36 cents to take care of any stuck pellets which are some what common for use when we fire our Crosman 1760 SE since it runs low on CO2 and we don't notice it.   Posted: Fri Jul 02, 2010 11:33 pm rsterne Moderator Joined: 15 Jan 2008 Posts: 2998 Location: Coalmont, BC Use the weed-whacker line as above.... but sharpen the other end and poke it through a piece of a cleaning patch.... Then you can pull it through instead of trying to push it.... You may need to play with the size of the "ball" on the end.... but once made this "bore snake" lasts forever.... I did use some weedeater line back when I first started shooting, and the Gamo pellets I was trying out kept jamming. I used the red line (don't know the size, but's pretty big) and ran it from the exit end up to the jammed pellets, and they came out pretty easily. If ya do use any solvent, keep running patches through until they come out clean. While your ag suits your purposes power wise, should you become addicted to ag's like the rest of us, speed + extra lub = dieseling (combustion of the left over oils in barrel) NOT good for ag's! _________________ .22 2300kt Crosman Custom   Posted: Sun Jul 04, 2010 10:16 am Slavia Moderator Joined: 31 Mar 2008 Posts: 4382 Location: Waseca, Minnesota, USA Since you don't have the high temperature/pressure deposits of powder residue like in a burner, you don't need a strong solvent to get them out. Things like 409, Windex, and other cleaner/degreasers will work just fine, and your seals will be happier, too. General purpose cleaners are something I have As for speed, I'm not overly concerned about that as much as I want accuracy and enough punch to kill starlings and sparrows.
