I realize C02 may not be the optimal powerplant for a larger pellet like 22. But i have read reviews of the discontinued daisy 622X that supposedly could develop a lot more velocity than the advertised 300FPS, and of course theres the 2044 and such that a lot of people still love. Si it's obvious that it CAN be done making a Co2 gun that uses .22 pellets and it can be done well. So why are there none left? (aside from the crossman 2204 and possible a few others) For hunting a 22 has got to be far superior in stopping power.

THey didn't sell like a .177. I used to have a crosman 22 8 shot pistol, but my dad's b!tch of a girlfriend threw it away along with all of my other collector's items. Stuff like a marksman olympic style break barrel, along with a thirty-five shot daisy pellet gun and others that can never be replaced. People didn't know what they could do so they didn't sell well. THe 2240 is the only gun in 22 that I know of that was made with the quality to sell.

There's another aspect to concider. And that's current gun laws around the country. For example in my state, as long as the caliber is .177 or lower and less then 700fps, no gun license is required. So all your mega mart sporting's good stores have stopped selling the .22 caliber weapons.

Further more, we have another idiotic law that states no gun required an foid card can be sold within 1 mile of a school. So stores like Sportmart and Sports authority, even Walmart and Kmart that use to sell rifles, shotguns, and the like, no longer do so. Just toy like bb guns is about all you end up with.

ahhhh, no wonder. Just another sign of political correctness out of control. Whe i was a kid you could buy air guns, and any type, at hardware stores and amny other place. Riteaid, formerly thrifty drug at the time, sold 22LR ammo right in the heart of L.A. ! I much prefer THAT world. Back then we'd have considered today's USA a communist country in many ways.

Don't you know it. I remember rifles and shotguns in the Sears cataloge. Heck I bought my first .22 burner from a Service Merchandise and there was a highschool right behind the store!

I just can't get over this ridiculous law that prevents any store to sell guns, powder or air, that require an foid, that's within 1 mile of a school.

If a store was exclusivly a "gun shop" you must be 18 or accompanied by a parent to enter. Even once you get inside the door, in order to even touch a gun you must present a current FOID, and that is also applied to mega mart stores that have a gun section.

Sidebar, did you find the type of pistol you were looking for yet DR?

I remember when every store that had anything in the way of sporting good had a rack of rifles, shotguns and air guns INCLUDING sears. You could walk in with money and walk out with a gun 5 minutes later. I would have been shocked to hear what things would come to a few decades later.

I decided on a daisy 617x. Mainly because it's the only co2 pistol that seems to be capable of velocity much higher than any other according to the reviews. Apparently daisy's specs are very pessimistic because several people have said the chrono'd them at over 600 FPS with BB's or light pellets and high 5's with more common weight pellets. And supposedly very quiet and very accurate for what it is. It has everything i wanted if that is true except any kind of laser/scope mount. I'm sure i can fabricate something tho, or use one of those trigger mounted lasers if need be, tho i can't imagine that being very stable. i haven't bought one yet because i have 5 days off starting today and i was hoping to find one locally so i could have it in time for the time off. But it looks like i will have to buy it online, as no one seems to carry it. This bring me back to the other subject....theres hardly anyone selling even air guns any more ! ARG!

Glad to hear you found something that will work for You.I hear you on the way things have changed.I remember getting a Mossberg 500 for my 15th birthday.I walked in the local hardware store with my folks.Picked it out,and was on my way,and shooting that day.I bought a couple air guns as well a year earlier from the same place...I only needed a note from my parents, and I was good to go... Rolling EyesI'm surprised they haven't started doing retinal scans the moment you walk into a gun store now.... Laughing

Just a suggestion, don't be so concerned with speed, what you are interested in is stopping power. That's why so many of us suggested the 2240. But since you've already made your decision, go with the heaviest pellet you can. This will give a higher FPE (foot pounds of energy) on target. You're shooting at realitvly close ranges, so loss of energy over distance won't be an issue. Last thing you want to use are those super light pellets, like gamo's raptors. Those things are junk!

Rats, while the the largest of critters, are tough buggers! I know, we've the "chicago super rats" around here. Darn things are ammune to most poisons, are the size of a medium dog, and get really angry if you shoot them with anything smaller then a 9mm.

Well, the point is not that i want incredible velocity, just more than what is normally available in other repeating co2's, because most of them just don't have any to speak of. Most are 400 or less and the 617 seems to go well over the advertise velocity by a good margin. The 617 from all i've read should have more velocity or at least the same as my C11 BB but with a heavy pellet. So stopping power should be considerable. All others i have found have been considerably less than my C11, so i'd be gaining nothing by trading "up". It won't match the 2240 for stopping power no doubt. But from what i gather and from the videos it's very quiet unlike the 2240 and is a repeater. As i've said b4, loud won't do....i lierally won't be able to use a loud gun at all.

So it really ticks all the boxes except the lack of a scope/laser mount, which could potentially stop the purchase. I found one not too far away today. About a 2.5 hour round trip, and i almost took a ride but i started thinking about the laser and decided i should wait till i have a better idea of whether it's doable. I posted the question in the general forum.

This is gonna sound nasty, but here's a little trick I heard about concerning rats, mice.... Put out some soda, in a shallow saucer, rodents are attracted the sweetness, but were never designed to burp... They basically explode.
