The other day I was adjusting my trigger and just shooting at dirt pointblank to feel the trigger pull and I thought hey ill shoot that piece of plywood too. So I did and the pellet went in about flush which was not as deep as all the other holes were, which was odd. So I paced out about ten yards or so and fired another near that hole but this pellet went in too deep too see like all the others...

Has anyone else noticed this before? Its the same with my longbow, it seems you need some airtime to get the momentum going.

Yes I have noticed that with my bow. The arrows start to penetrate more as the distance increases. At incredibly long ranges with bows, the arrows starts to gain velocity as it falls down.

Haven't noticed this with pellets, though.

The pentration at distance woudl be greater because the particular bit of wood the pellet hit was harder grain, had different moisture content, more glue, etc.etc....

Pellets do NOT gain energy with distance.... Arrows at close range can still be "wobbling" after their release..... which settles down a bit with distance....

What he said

Yes, the flexing of the arrows could make them hit like a banana, thus limiting penetration.

Doesn't momentum, however increase with flight time? Bob?

Momentum is velocity times mass.... since the mass is a constant and the arrow (or pellet) is constantly losing velocity there is no way that momentum can increase with flight time....

Got it.

Not really sure what to add to this...

Interesting, I figured it was just the board but was curious if the same rules applied, thanks for clearing that up!
