well i was shooting around, and i loaded a pellet closed the barrel of my phantom and pulled the trigger i herd this odd bang and the can i shoot at did not move i opened the barrel and looked in, the pellet was still there but the skirt was flatened out covering part of thr O-ring
i figured that the noise was the spring slaming the end of the piston like a dry fire,
then i shot it a few more times tonight at the bottom of a can and ...
it did not even peirce the can normaly it could blow right through it.....
i have never dry fired it before and this was the first time this happened could one time really damage it? or could i be some other reason? |

You could possibly have damaged the O ring seal and it's leaking air pressure.

| Probably the o-ring, although sometimes a dry-fire on a springer can cause damage to the spring or the piston seal. Look at the o-ring carefully- it is deformed in any way? If not, try lubing it and see what happens, if it is deformed, replace it. If it's not deformed and lubing it changes nothing, you should be taking the gun apart to check for other problems. |

I've had springs break and if they break at the trigger end the sear usually doesn't catch.
I've had them break inside the piston and the gun may still shoot almost as hard but with less consistant velocities, varying as much as 50fps dependant upon the amount of spring interference from shot to shot. |

| I have a gun around here somewhere with a "2- piece" or "broken" spring- broken near the rear of the tube- and it lowered the gun's velocity by about 20% (600fps to around 475fps) due to the ragged ends overlapping, jamming together (thus shortening the total spring length) and rubbing the tube (frictional losses). |

| Now that's funny. You would have thought the pellets that went through afterwards would have pushed anything like that out. Live and learn, I guess. |
