hi,
i was thinking about some people talking about modding a springer and the could cut 2" off it and weld it back together i was thinking could you cut a plug that is 2 inches in thickness and put it in the piston ? it would make it more powerful without weakening it...
or is there something i forgot to take into account?? |

Hi outdoorsman
What exactly do they cut 2" off and weld it back together, is it the tube the spring goes in, if so then I would have thought that would be a bit dodgy.
I would have thought your idea of packing the piston would be a lot simpler.

You are obviously talking about a gun like the Crosman Phantom 500 which has a very long piston in it. The problem with adding a giant "shim" in the top of the piston is that now you've added that much more space that needs to be compressed in the spring when you go to reassemble the gun- i.e. you've made it more difficult and it may require a spring compressor to get it back together.
The other thing is the weight being added to the piston. It may not be a problem- bit it is altering the characteristics of the gun and putting the weight at the top of the piston might result in a rather heavier slam of the piston at full spring exptension and make the gun's recoil harsher than absolutely necessary.
Don't misunderstand- I not saying you couldn't try it and see- but be aware you may be wanting to take it apart again if things don't work out optimally. |

| Sounds like he's talking about the Phantom mod, doesn't he. I mean what would be the point of cutting something and re welding it back on? |

| There's a couple more at the Coldwood Walmart as far as I know. Mine is finaly setling down after a few hundred shots. I just ordered a Charlie trigger for it...next is a scope. Must make a spring compressor also. |

you are, to put it simple, nuts if you think that welding a piston together is a good idea. This is not ment to insult but unless you can guarrentee that you can get the piston back to gether 100% straight you will destroy your ag, aside from that if you heat up the piston to the welding point, it will be unevenly tempered and may not even hold together for more then one shot, i suggest you research more carefully this mod b4 you go and do it.

did you not read my initial post?
the point was so i did not have to cut the piston but i said other people had...
I DID NOT WANT TO CUT IT
my post said
if i put a 2" wide shim would that accomplish the same goal i also said in my post that i did not want to do it because i did not want to weaken the piston, personaly i thought it was to risky. |

There's no need to attempt to re-weld anything with the Phantom mod- only cutting the piston and then extending the cocking arm slot and putting in a new trigger catch slot.
I seem to recall some talk somewhere around about piston re-welding, but I can't remember what it was in respect to anymore. Not the best idea- but for a skilled, professional welder- maybe- as they would be the least likely to leave slag inside the piston to interfere with the spring and do the cleanest job on the outer side as well. What the heat would do to the piston's overall strength I can't say. But- as people have pointed out- probably not a very good idea. And- not at all required for a mod to a Phantom 500.
Look here to see what piston work needs to be done:
