Hey, I got 2 birds today, a fat sparrow and a dove. The only thing that's BAD about this that it took 3 shots to bring the dove down! I think the first shot grazed his wing or something because he started to get spooked and probably moved at the time I shot. I had to shoot at him when he was in a tree with some little twigs in front of him, so that shot could have been thrown of course a bit after hitting the twigs. Then he fell on the floor and I thought he was dead...but he started moving. Then the last shot was the finisher. I really did feel bad for him; when I kill animals for pest control or hunting I want them to feel no pain and I think he felt a lot of pain.
That's why I am getting a more powerful gun though, so no incidents like this in the future!
But the fat sparrow kill was pretty nice, I believe it was a head or neck shot, but I couldnt find the body! I blew him right off his perch on a wall! |

It's probably never a good idea to shoot an animal when there's stuff in front of it, even if you do have the power. It might also be a good idea to use lure, as you'll be able to get the animals in a spot where you can hit and find them more easily.
Now, getting a good gun will also help a lot. It's good to rule out as many possibilities as you can. |

Yeah, well my Pumpmaster is a pretty nice gun for the money--only 60 or so bucks plus it came with a scope. It shoots BB's and pellets, and is good for plinking, target practice, AND small pest control. |

Maybe good bang for your buck, but more buck is also more bang.
Personally, I'd still say it's not a decent piece of hunting equipment though. And once you get a bit of a better gun, I bet you won't ever go back. You know you want it.

| I don't think it's legal for Broom to hunt. |

A Hattori Hanzō sword (yeah, I only know of 'em b/c of Kill Bill) is considered the best samurai swords made, but you still wouldn't take it to a gun fight. I don't think he is saying your gun is a piece of sh!t, only that its not designed for hunting. I know it is capable of killing small birds w/o them flopping too long in painfully slow death, but that's about it. I killed countless birds as a kid w/my 760 Pumpmaster, and it holds a special place in my heart. |

what I ment. Sorry if I stepped on your feelings, but when you say it's bang for your buck I assume you bought it yourself and haven't gotten it as a present.

What's your point Fritz?
Let me get something straight. I consider myself reasonably well read on the subject of hunting. We do give a lot of space for error on this forum but if something smells fishy or anything, we try to handle it in a subtile fashion so someone can improve. Try to read the smileys too.
Please think about what we're representing as a forum. |

| I didn't mean it like that, Broom. I meant *IIRC* it is illegal to hunt with airguns in the NL. Pretty sure you said that yourself in a previous post. |

Seems to me that a 760 is hardly an adequate rifle for hunting much of anything. Nothing wrong with saying it, it's true. It's not a very accurate rifle, and while it may have enough power to dispatch the smallest things- if you can't hit these things, it's irrelevant.
I believe hunting doves just about everywhere is illegal, and hunting anything with a rifle that's on/off in respect to accuracy is just plain silly, and the 3 shots taken to try and get the dove in this example tends to exemplify this, doesn't it?
In any event, narrating "kills gone bad" on the internet is not necessarily the best thing to be doing.
This is not supposed to be some sort of a pissing contest, only someone (broom) pointing out that if you're serious about hunting, getting a better tool for the job is a good idea. Making sure what you're shooting is also not against the law is probably a better idea.
BTW- is this "Rogerflat" masquerading as someone else? |
