Coincidence, or design? |

I've got a constant battle going on with roof rats. Started several years ago when I saw some come down from the roof tiles, crawl down the stucco, and get into a bush. Then I realized that there was a whole lotta rats around, and all the nieghbors had em too. I had the same question as you, what airgun is best to dispatch them?
Well, I've tried a whole lot of different guns, but it all boils down to accuracy, and punch...in other words, an accurate rifle and the right pellet.
I prefer wadcutter pellets, because they tend to deliver a hell of a punch and are less likely to go through them...and I like .177 pellets because its easier to get a pinpoint headshot with them. My favorite airgun to use is the Gamo CFX underlever...but any accurate gun will work...just hit them in the head!!! For sideshots, aim for the earhole or between the eye and bottom of the ear, or between the eyes for a straight-on shot.
Also, its key to bring the rats to you so that you can control and manipulate the situation. Set up a bait station with good shot angles and a good backstop. If you get tired of waiting for them, set up a motion detector on the bait station. Then you can kick back and do other things until the detector goes off.
My rat battles are a lot of fun!!!
Also, forgot to mention that they frequent my truck engine and barbeque. For those particular battles, I use a Beeman P3 pistol and .177 polymag pellets. The barbeque rats are the most interesting. When they are under the grilles, they think that they are invisible...and they were for the longest time until I saw one move slightly. Then I made nightly rounds where I gently lifted the lid of the barbeque up, and with my headlight I could make out a ratty crouched under a grill. Since the pistol was already loaded and ready, I just simply put the muzzle between the grillrods and fired. Easy kills for at least 4 or 5 nights, some twice in one night. They like the drippings in the bottom pan. All those rats are gone now...and that particular "barbeque trait" has been eliminated, I guess because all of them who had learned to get in the barbeque never made it back out. |
