Maybe you'd do good to read up a bit on airguns. A good idea would also be to be more specific, as mentioned before. In which case the primary reason is power. You need the multiple pumps for building up the power in the gun. Single pumps tend towards target systems because they will produce a consistant "push" each time you shoot. .177 vs .22 I've found is about a couple of things. Handling, some people just can't manage the small size of the .177 so they use .22. Hunting, .22 will carry a higher punch making it more likely for a clean kill so they tend to be used more.
