I want to buy a good, powerful, accurate break-barrel .177 Caliber air rifle with a velocity of 1000 fps or higher that is relatively cheap and can be used within my backyard in the city, with neighbors on both sides. I will be plinking, varmint hunting and using the gun for pest control.

I am interested in quite a few so far. The first, the Crosman Quest 1000(x) seems like a good one except multiple reviews said that the first few shots are almost as loud as a .22LR. That would definitely be a problem.

I also like the Crosman Storm XT and Phantom 1000x and the Gamo Hunter Sport.

I really like all Gamo air guns but is they performance really worth the extra dough?

Thanks in advance.

First off, you should understand that the 1000 fps claim is made with shooting the lightest, non-lead pellets.... In the real world, 1000 fps in .177 means about 850.... and 800 fps in .22 means about 650.... with "normal" weight lead pellets.... that's actually a good thing as anything over about 950 fps tends to lose accuracy because of transonic effects....

The first shots being very loud mean that the gun is over-lubricated and is "dieseling".... This is hard on the gun, but it usually goes away within a few shots.... and won't return unless you add oil to the transfer port.... If you actually DO get a gun up around 1100 fps, then it WILL be loud because of the sonic "crack" of the bullet.... If quiet is on your agenda, stick to guns advertised at around 1000 fps in .177 (ie "medium" springers), not more....

Gamo generally tend to inflate their numbers as "speed sells".... If you want a good quality medium springer, check out the Diana 34....

Bob

i just bought a used storm in .177 with a grt trigger. (i'm partial though to .22. the deal was just too good to pass up Rolling Eyes )

they run $100 new.

mine shoots 7.9 grain @ 900fps flat. that power will git-r-dun.

though i've never shot one the d-34 is well thought of around here.

rsterne and sniper are correct on all counts.

I have a Crosman G1, which performs the same as sniper's storm. The G1, Phantom, Storm, and Quest are all the same gun offered with different combinations of stock and sights.

Check the laws in your area. Make sure it's legal... if not... then I didn't see this post, eh?

Then, I'd get a Diana 34 (.177).

So Diana 34, eh? So it is quiet enough to be used in a neighborhood, in my backyard in the city?

Any good .22's quiet enough? Hopefully that come with a scope? And don't they sell a Diana 34 with a scope? I think I saw one on pyramydair.com or airgundepot.com? (Or both?)

I 2nd this, I purchased a storm XT with a centerpoint scope. This gun is very accurate considering i paid 109$ I purchased this mainly for my G/F because my .22 cal walther talon to to big and heavy for her to shoot, Hell she cant even cock it. Back to the point I'm overwhelmingly please with the crosman storm xt. You get to much bang for your buck!

Bullet,

When it comes to being in the city, I do "feel your pain". When I look out my back window, I can see the Sears Tower in the "loop", down town chicago. Houses here are packed so close together, I can stand between either nieighbor's house and mine and touch both homes and not really have to strech that much to do so. Have a postage stamp sized back yard that's only 25' x 25'. Not the ideal place to set up a place to shoot.

Now if you live in one of the newer suburbs somewheres in the country, where you can drive a tank between houses and you all have 7' tall privacy wooden fences you'll be alright.

In both our cases, what you really need to ask yourself, is how well do ya know your nieghbors, and thier neighbors, and everybody around your house that can possibly see into your yard from any window in their house. Because it just takes one (slot for explitive) to ruin all your fun. And next thing you'll know, every broken window, every ding in a car, and every time a street lamp goes out, guess who'll get the blame?

It's very sad situtation indeed, I'm on another forum that's dedicated to local fishing, but they do have some side forums for hunting, and a father was asking this same question you are.

Seems he got his 12yr old boy a bb gun for xmas, and they were out in their back yard doing some practicing. The father is an avid hunter and wanted to start teaching his son. He did everything right in my estimation. Had a good back stop, he and son were both wearing eye protection and so on. Less then half hour outside, and the cops showed up because they'd gotten a complaint. And they started going off about discharging a gun withing city limits and all that jazz. (Something else you also have to concider).

Like I said, it just takes one (slot for another explitive) to ruin everybody's fun. Just be careful what ever you do.
