Everybody knows it can be done... I don't think anyone will admit it though.

I'm not trying to start a rhetoric battle, but why would it be unethical and irresponsible. I understand the illegal part. If it was close enough range with a gun capable of delivering enough FPE to effectively kill your game then that would be ethical. I'm thinking that the irresponsible part would be the, what if factor, does this deer drop right there or run around with a .22 pellet rattling around inside it's brain pan. I wouldn't shoot a deer for the fact that if I kill it I have to gut it. No thanks. I'll keep the buzzards and hawks and other critter's around here feed off tree rats and rodents.

Many years ago I killed a deer with a monkey wrench. He had gotten caught in a barbed wire fence and had already cut his throat on the barbed wire. At the time I did not have a gun of any kind but I feel it would have been more humane to have shot him with a pellet gun than to knock him in the head with a monkey wrench. So I don't see where using a pellet to kill a dear is wrong. You can miss and injure a dear with any gun or bow and have it get away and suffer. I do agree that it is most unwise to hunt big game with a pellet gun but only because you must be very excellent to be successful. Legality is another subject altogether.

Illegal is one thing. The guy probably did this illegally, but that's not my problem.

If the critter (whatever it is one decides to shoot) dies humanely, was it really irresponsible? I can face the fact that a 12g slug or a glorified razorbladed stick launcher doesn't always kill the deer. We already had this discussion multiple times in the hunting section.

This guy just proved that it can be done. If it was me and a Mrod or the deer, guess who's walking out of the woods on two legs? Now I'm not going deer hunting with a .22 of any kind (especially seeing the .223 won't stop a human, and I care more about the critters than people (but that's another problem)).

Here is my 2 cents, for what it's worth. There have been plenty of grizzly bears killed with the 22 LR, but who in their right mind would suggest that a 22LR was an ethical bear rifle? The problem that I have with posts like the deer post and all the back slapping going on, is that it encourages people who have very liitle experience with hunting or with weapons to do some seriously stupid things. That is both irresponsible and unethical. Anyone who is experienced will not be surprised by the fact that he killed that deer with an Mrod, they will also understand just how fine a line he was walking. Putting that notion into the head of some guy who really has no clue is irresponsible at best. Sure, if I were in a survival situation I would not hesitate to use an Mrod to take a deer. It can be done, but it sure isn't something you post on a forum or brag about IMO. The reason that game laws are written the way they are speaks directly to this issue. A skilled hunter can kill deer all day long with a .22LR, but in the hands of the less experienced it is a disaster waiting to happen. Unfortunately people are not very good at admitting their shortcomings so sane minimums have to be encouraged. If it were my site I would pull the thread and state that I do not condone the unethical or illegal use of airguns for hunting.

Irresponsible because we present a public face for the sport, and suffer the consequences of public misperception. Unethical because the "what if" scenarios are rare, and don't support the intentional act. And finally, because as a forum we can't condone illegal acts.
