I recently bought a Gamo Hunter Sport. It is advertised 1250 with PBA 1000 with lead. I have been cpmparing it to my Ruger which advertised 1000 period.
Im questioning the power of the Gamo. It is used. I do get the sonic crack when i shoot the PBA through the Gamo, so shoud i asume that the power level of the Gamo is okay? My guess is that if the velocity was a problem with the gun the PBA wouldnt even make the crack sound right, because it wouldnt be traveling as fast?
Now thw Ruger will make the same crack sound if i put a PBA though it but Im not questioning the power of the Ruger at this point.
I have shoot identical pellets at a 2x4 and each time the Ruger penetrates farther than the Gamo. I guess thats why Im questioning if the power plant is working properly. |

| You should never shoot PBA's with any rifle that produces power. Heavy pellets man, HEAVY PELLETS! |

Gamo is often more about the "sizzle" than it is about the "steak". All it's ratings are with "PBA"-i.e. non-lead lightweight pellets.
You could try tuning the Gamo- might smooth it out a bit if nothing else. |

nobdy has really answered my question. I dont have a Chrony. I know that PBA's are crap and i only used it for testing twice. If the powerplant were damaged then i would expect lower FPS ratings. That would mean that even a PBA through a damager power plant could not reach the speeds necessary to generate the sonic crack right? Should i assume the piston and spring are okay?
I did notice when I took apart this "new" gun, there was thread lock alreadt on the stock screws and the underside of the action that contains the spring had some black greasy substance on it allready too. This gun could have been shot 10 times or 10 thousand for all i know. |

Some manufacturers inflate the FPS ratings for their guns, and there are differences between guns of the same model. They say "numbers don't lie," but the people providing the numbers sure do.
I would say that if it cocks and fires smoothly (and consistently) don't worry about it. Just keep shooting. |

With pellets about 8 grain it will be shooting somewhere around 880fps
if its brakes 900 you have a good one...
& the .22 version rated at 722fps will in fact be shooting around 630fps..
It sound about right... |

springers rated at 1000fps will run 900 tops/7.9 in .177
springers rated at 800fps will run 700 tops 14.3 in .22
i have many springers and a chrony.
that means 850/.177 and 650/.22.. on average
the translation in fpe is 13-14 in .177
and 14-15 in .22.....
rifles of this power rating are "medium" powered.
as slavia said. consitency is the most important. .... |

If you are asking whether your rifle is "OK", the answer is "who knows?" The guys that tune Gamos have told me that a significant number of them have fairly serious problems right out of the box. Bad piston seals are common. Yours is shooting PBA at least 1000fps if you are getting a sonic crack, but I'd be real surprised if it were doing an honest 800 with 8grs. A fully tuned gamo with a high performance spring will still only do in the high 800's. Gamo is one of the worst for inflated velocity claims.
You have to be careful about listening for a sonic crack too. If it really is SS the sound should appear to come from some distance from the rifle. You can get SS gasses escaping at the muzzle, but the pellet really isn't going that fast. IMO anyone who has the least concern for speed should get a chronograph. Subjective impressions based on sound or how "hard hitting" the gun is are just about meaningless.

You stated that "the Ruger penetrates farther into a 2x4.
That should tell you the Gamo-Whamo is not making the same power as the Ruger.
Gamo company is famous for over stating the power of there rifles. The only way they get these ridiculous numbers in FPS is by shooting a well tuned factory only gun with the lightest pellet known to man.
The truth is in the pudding, and the penetration into a 2x4 is the proof .
Your Ruger is the better of the two, both in quality and power.

There is no answer to "is my gun performing at it's optimum" (I've paraphrased here)- you need to disassemble and tune it- looking for problems and correcting them as you go.
As people have pointed out, it appears your rifle is within the expected output range of a Gamo, good or bad. Unfortunately, the advertised range and the breadth of this range is excessively large on most Gamo products- but your Gamo is not likely "defective". |

How far from the 2x4 were you?
Have you tried the same "test" with diffrent pellets?
Did you clean and oil both guns first? |
