Im getting a .22 and wondering if a .177 backstop is okay for .22 match type pellets?

My newspaper/cardboard box backstop will stop a .22LR rimfire, so either of those airgun calibers should be fine.

What is your .177 backstop?

You probably won't need to change anything.

Are you talking about a true backstop, or bullet trap? To me a backstop is a mound of dirt, which would be literally impenetrable by small arms. A trap is meant to contain "most" of the projectiles fired.

for anything 12fpe+...

dried out tree logs. believe me..

stack them in a 25 or so degree angle ( for any ricochet)

put some plywood behind the logs as cya (cover your a$$).

Glad you clarified, I didn't realize the difference in terminology. I was wondering b/c my .177 caliber trap (started filling trap w/poly fill to help slow it down w/o much help) was taking a major beating just from my .25 cal slingshot balls...don't think it could take a .22 pellet from my RWS 350 @ > four times the fpe with a pointed pellet.

Yes, he would indeed. And he also might be smart enough to take the box out to the range to test it with a .22LR... Maybe.

So anyway, back to the topic: You should be O.K. with either .177 or .22.

Take a look at this thread for more backstop ideas, ranging from the very simple to Alstone's elegant design:

If you're going to add anything to the trap, it should be plywood, carpet, or duct seal (preference to the ds). IIRC 2" should stop most .177 and .22 pellets.

What load did they use? .22LR does between 75 and 125fpe usually.

wrong answer tim. Laughing

.22 lr high velocity (130 fpe) zips right through a full size phone book.
even with hollow points. also through a 5 gallon bucket of water inside 50
yards.

and... the full power range of .22 rimfire (not wmr) is 12-180ish fpe. Shocked
