I have noticed that almost all the ads say their airgun shoots very accurately. I also notice that most of the reviews refer to shooting groups about dime size. It seems to me that if you are close enough with any gun (except a shotgun) you could get dime size groups. So why don't the reviewers push the limits and try for longer distances and tight groups? The professional reporters almost never say anything about the distance they are shooting.

Actually, I usually see people post distance of shot when they mention their group spread. It would be, as you mentioned worthless to post spread w/o stating the distance of the shot. As far as ads; from what I've seen they usually just stick to claiming blanket "accuracy" w/o posting any kind of stats. All those who I'd consider professional reporters would always mention shot distance when talking about accuracy.

Aside...hooray for the edit button's resurrection!

Generally ad campaigns would choose not to list distance, but any self respecting advertiser or reporter WILL include some measure of distance.

If the gun won't shoot into the size of a dime at 10yards, there is probably something wrong.

No matter the distance, the size of a squirrel's head doesn't change. If it won't hit a half dollar at distance X, it's useless. If you can't hit a half dollar at distance X, you shouldn't be shooting at anything but targets.
