you are advise in the manual when you buy a break barrel not to cock the gun and leave it that way for extensive amounts of time for obvious reasons, but when i hunt can i break the barrel slightly so it does not cock then, put the pellet in then close it again?

it sounds confusing but i hope you get what i am saying

Any load or tension on any spring will cause it to wear eventually, That's another reason for why I keep to Co2 Wink

Like lauchlin said, hours is no problem. Just don't leave it cocked for days, because the spring will take a set. It is just the nature of metal . . .

Lauchlin probably has the right idea- being cocked for a few hours here and there while hunting isn't likely to be a major problem. Of course- if you have a modified gun or one that may be able to 'slip' if it falls or gets banged against something- you might be looking at an "accidental discharge" which can't be good!

In response to your specific question- breaking the barrel slightly, inserting a pellet and then closing it again: That is no issue. You are not 'loading the spring' except for the time you have the gun jammed under your arm or against your leg to open it against the spring and insert the pellet. Once you close the barrel against the spring pressure- the spring is exactly as it would be with no pellet in it. I store some springers with a pellet like this, ready to go, at all times so I only have to cock and fire if something's outside ripping apart my garbage or such- no loading time wasted.
