what is the minimum fpe (in .22) to drop a coon say 40-50 lbs????
where would shot placement be?????

Shot placement..right underneath the ear,and right behind the eye.I would venture to say a minimum of 15-18fpe at impact.More if you aim between the eyes,as the skull is thicker there......40-50 pounds..that's a huge coon!Did you see one that big Sniper?

I think you would be good to go.Pellet placement mid-line between ear,and eye should drop it.I would in no way body shoot it,as they a really tough,and have thick hides.You could kill it that way but it would suffer.My buddy took a 15-20 pounder off my moms deck,when we were teens, with a .20 Benji pump,but hit it directly in the eye.I've seen a 30-40 pounder in Yosemite,and he was a monster!If you nail a biggin you gotta post the pics! The rule of thumb for a quick kill with good shot placement is a minimum of 1 FPE per pound of body weight.... I wouldn't use anything less than the power of a .22 CB cap (36 FPE) for regular size 'coons.... for a monster like that, I would use at least a .22 Short HP (66 FPE).... Shocked

I've taken lots of 20-25 lb. 'coons with a head shot with a .22 CB cap.... I understand that in some states the ONLY round you are allowed to shoot racoons with is a .22 Short HP high velocity.... (I assume because they are often shot in trees).... Rolling Eyes

What I'm saying is that unless you have something pretty potent, I wouldn't recommend taking on a 'coon.... I wouldn't try it with a Marauder.... They can be incredibly nasty.... I wouldn't want to be within striking range of an injured one.... Shocked

Some people might frown on this- but I shot a young raccoon (10-12-ish lbs based on the "shovel scale" (me with the carcass on a shovel)) out of a tree where it/it's family was dining again one night with a, gasp! 1077 putting out about 8fpe- but the concept was multiple shots- i.e. three pellets plugged into it rapidly one-after-one, in the neck. The idea here was to knock out a youngster and scare them all off for the rest of the season. It worked and it dropped like a rock. Family never came back again either. But- holy crap- I had to go back into the garage and close the door- it sounded like a bunch of cavemen screeching when the one was killed- I think the rest of them would have eaten me alive if they could have reached me.

My point: If you are at relatively close range (i.e. 50 feet or less) with the multi-shot Marauder, I think you could pull it off if you can plant 2 or 3 pellets in the right location quickly enough.

Rsterne and Airguneric both make good points, but I think I would have an escape route planned just in case your mutant sumo racoon gets pissed.

Everybody has some good points on this.I like Bob's point on 1fpe per pound of body weight.That's very wise..and the safest way to go.The only problem is that I take it Sniper's mom lives in a residential area,and like myself lives in Ca. Discharging even a .22 short here will give you free rent in the gray bar hotel for a while.

I think he can pull it off with the M-rod.."shot placement is key"There wouldn't be much margin of error here.I agree coon's can be real nasty.I would bait it with some cat food,and let it come to me.The closer the better,and window snipe it,thus insuring personal safety,while avoiding detection. If he can get in real close then a predator or super H point would work better.

The Super H points are almost like reverse predators. They shed the top ring on entry and the skirt collapses in on the main body to form a large cylindrical mass that penetrates quite far. Predators do the contrary, the large mushroom gets left behind whilst the light polymer tip is supposed to further penetrate.

mom saw one of the coons at sunrise. they seem to be under 30lbs. (she has had 'em 50+lbs) Shocked

i've "taken out" about 10-11 coons in the past 11yrs here.
they were coming in and eatin the birdfood.
gotten a couple easily over 35-40 lbs.
use the biggest thing ya got and hit em square in the head. body shots won't do it. trust me.
ive had one take 7-8 hits from a 22mag at 15yd, and still not drop out of the tree. i thought i was somehow missing, until he finally droped and we did the autopsy. hit em' every time(that one was easily over 40 lb).

$1300 vet bill....Ouuuuuuch!Time to camp out on mom's couch for a minute.With that monster BSA you have on the M-rod you should be able to get that eye ball shot.Used to snipe possums at night from my mom's living room,through the open slider door,off the deck,and up into the garden.They are pretty tough as well,but never had an issue....
