OK, guys, I need some help from the ballistics experts out there. I just cut and recrowned the .177 barrel of my RS2. The improvement in accuracy was astounding. I had mainly shot the .22 barrel because the .177 barrel was terribly inconsistent.
Now for the problem. At 10 meters, the gun shoots nice 1/4" groups, and the pellets make nice round holes. However, at 25 meters, the gun still shoots about 3/4" groups, but the nice round holes are now long tears in the target. I think my pellets are destabilizing somewhere between 10 and 25 meters.
This seems to happen with most if not all pellets. Any thoughts? |

When you say "recrowned," do you mean finely polished in addition to shaped and squared?
If you've recovered any of the 25m pellets - what do they look like? |

Slavia, yes, shaped, squared, and polished. Regrettably, my backstop is several bales of straw. It makes pellet recovery almost impossible. The thing is that before the recrown job, the gun tore targets at 10 meters the same way it does now at 25. Now at 10 meters, it punches nice round holes. I guess I'll run through a good sampling of pellets and see if I can find some that are more stable.
My feeling is that the gun is shooting so near the sound barrier that the pellets are simply unstable. I'll see if I have some heavier pellets lying around and try them. |
