If you simply MUST do a cold blue, I strongly suggest you use only Brownell's 44/40 cold blue solution and follow the included instructions to the absolute letter. It's the very best of a bad lot. Be aware though, no matter how good a job you do, it'll always look like cold bluing.

Far better if you can find a gunsmith in your area who does hot bluing, strip the receiver all the way down, and give it to him to polish and blue. He may charge you a few bucks to throw it in the tank next time he blues but the results will be far superior.

Cold blueing is really for touching up very small areas. Hot tank blueing is better if you can arrange it.

Buster is absolutely right about following the instructions to the letter, especially the part where they tell you to "thoroughly degrease." What they mean is anal compulsive fanatic degreasing.

Well, I believe this guy saying the blueing isn't that good. Especially when you see it next to a German or UK made gun. I got me a Crosman barrel recently, and they're dead cheap of course, but dang, even I could do that blueing better. Razz

Has anybody tried Birchwood Casey "Presto Black"?

The Presto Black produces a blue/black oxide. The actual color varies with the steel to which it is applied and can be applied as multiple applications to blend or darken as may be desired.

I've used it for 35 years and had pretty good luck with it.
