I just got off the phone with the NYSDEC environmental police and as it stands hunting with an airgun in New York State is ILLEGAL. There currently is a bill before the state assembly but no word where it stands now.

I'm new to airguns, so this is probably old news to everyone here if so I will delete this post. Are there any other states that do not allow you to hunt with airguns?

Illegal so far here in Illinois too. Heck, can't even hunt with a rifles either, unless a muzzel loader. Most hunting here is done by either shotgun or bow. There is a short handgun season for deer in january. And only the handicapped or elderly can use a crossbow.

i beleive NC says no to airgunning as well, except for pests.
i need to check but, i might be wrong about the bigbores for deer.
they are all classed as a gun w/ regard to shooting one(none in city limits etc...)
other wise i like NC's gun freindly laws

Minnesota says no to airgun hunting, except for pest control on your own property (or on private property with the owner's permission).

New York does make provision for pest control:

Update: Called NYSDEC up in Albany and you can use an airgun for pest control, but you must meet the same setback requirements as a firearm. Meaning no shooting within 500ft of a dwelling unless you have permission, etc. Supposedly NYSDEC does not say you can't use a airgun for hunting but states you may only hunt with a firearm or bow. They are looking into changing this but we all know how fast government moves.

It is also legal to use an airgun in self defense in all 50 states. Who is to say that the thing you shoot wasn't trying to attack you?

O.K., so only use a firearm. What's a firearm? They define it in §180.3:

IMO, I don't think that these state's can classify Airgun's as firearm's and then say their not when its not convenient for them. You cant have it both way's. Why does our government dick us around so much. I think that the US citizen's need to start stock piling their weapons and getting organized, because the minute our gun's get taken away all sh!t will hit the fan.

I bet you would have a tough time making the ranger/police believe that your air gun is considered a firearm even if the NYSDEC define it that way. Stupid people in places of power always ruin life for the average Joe.

I'm very sure that any of the forum members would do a better job than Obama.
