Already have those.... Cool

FWIW, I'll mostly be using it for holding square or rectangular stock.... a bit hard to dial that anyway.... Rolling Eyes

For what I want to do, dialing will be tricky.... but not impossible.... I'll just have to mount the dial indicator on the cross feed and dial off the flats.... I realize with square or rectangular work mounted on center you can dial off the corners.... but I need to center a circle equally from one end and two sides of a rectangular piece.... Rolling Eyes

RE the square hole?.... since a mortise drill won't work in metal, maybe they make a square broach? (I've done keyways).... I dunno, never had to do one.... Embarassed

Since we're talking about wierd jobs.... how would you go about drilling and tapping four (actually 3, but indexed off an existing hole) blind holes at 90* to each other on the circumference of a round work piece WITHOUT having an index head?.... I have a milling attachment for my lathe.... This is for mounting a valve as done in a Disco (or drilling a main tube to accept a Disco valve) without having to set up for each hole individually.... Rolling Eyes

Hi Bob;

I seem to recall you having an atlas 6" lathe, right? If so, you should have 60 stop indexing. Just behind the chuck at about the 9 o'clock position if you're looking at the chuck there is an index pin.

HTH.

Sure, there is indexing on the headstock (Atlas 12").... but unless I have a drill mounted on the milling attachment it doesn't do much good.... except for layout, maybe.... Rolling Eyes

or am i missing something obvious?.... Embarassed

Dammit Bob!

Reasonable, On topic, Correct! I'm gonna report you to the board admin if you keep this up!

Apparently I was dummying out a lot yesterday. This was one of them. Please ignore the man behind the curtain and all that.

Although, if you were to mount a dremel or drill in your milling attachment, you could do the job easily. But that might be more work that it's worth.

I use a 60 T gear on the change gear end of the chuck shaft, and use a bar with a dog on it to lock into the gear, then use the teeth to divide the work into whatever, this is of cause using a tool post mounted drill press.

YUP, a tool post mounted drill press would be the ticket.... Rolling Eyes

You could use an ordinary pistol drill, make a clamp to fit where the front handle fits with a ½” square bar welded on to it so that when clamped in the tool post the drill is centred on the work piece, then use the cross slide to move the drill into the work.

This way you can drill at any angle you want also compound angles using the compound slide, light milling or swing the whole lot around in place of the center and do bore grinding, provided you have a drill with good bearings.

I have a mount for a 1/4" air grinder for my cross slide, and another for my Dremel.... but both are too light / fast for this work.... Rolling Eyes

It might be worth getting a drill and setting it up just for this purpose.... If I mount it in the vice in the milling attachment I could have 3-axis feed, and if it's on the centerline of the swivel for the vise I could even do compound angles.... Shocked

I'll have to give this some thought.... depends on if I can justify the time and money now to make things easier later.... Wink
