What's really starting to bother me here is that you assume everyone else is somehow sub-standard to yourself. You know very well what context the term "paranoia" was being used for the purposes of this discussion. You apparently enjoy perusing the DSM manual- go find the affliction from which your example person suffers instead of being contrary just for the sake of being contrary.
The ongoing sideways remarks "sour grapes", "you obviously don't", "the DSM-IV is the..." (note, DSM-V is on the way shortly- so you can throw out your references to DSM-IV in a few months and go purchase the new version). Attempting to belittle people in a poorly shrouded ad hominem context, while at the same time attempting to prove your knowledge base and slanting the discussion, is counterproductive. Seems to me you just want to fight- the excessive length of your posts also seems to prove that you have an excess amount of free time. I invite you to use this time more productively than hanging around here with us unedumacated types that must be insulted in order to remain in their appropriate place by your thinking. |

From my way of looking at this...you seem to be describing yourself...and perhaps others in this thread.

Brodine did not start the fight, he joined the discussion. It was you and Broom who started the getting bent out of shape when the facts started getting posted.
You started the name calling by using the word "paranoid." Then buster gives a very well balanced and professional definition to the word so as to point out that you are simply name calling and not using the proper words to describe other people.
It's like calling someone a "retard" when we think they made an uneducated comment or action. Many in society use that term, but the term is actually a description of a real condition that affects a segment of the world population that have a genetic condition. So to call someone retarded is to take a real term and try to make it fit your own way of thinking.
Eric and Broom...as the site owner and moderators, you both hold the responsibility in your hands to not allow yourselves to get into shouting matches and name calling sessions with your members. Broom at least came back and admitted that he is willing to listen and, if possible or necessary depending on the subject, learn.

Oh, and a long post does not mean the person should be using their time more constructively doing something else besides posting. If you actually took the time to read Buster's posts, you would see he is a very experienced person who holds a true knowledge and experience for self defense and personal protection.
You seem to be intimidated by people who hold more knowledge than you on a specific subject and who can express themselves clearly and intelligently.
Eric...it's time to remove your social pacifier and grow up. |

I'm not being contrary just for the sake of being contrary, you're just wrong and don't like having it pointed out. Pretty simple.
I don't think you're sub-standard, I just know you're wrong.

But allowing you to continue to say things which are not correct or true is productive?
I make "ad hominem" attacks? Apparently you think being told you're wrong is a personal attack on your character. Huh.
For any who don't know, "Ad hominem attack" is just a fancy way of saying I'm attacking somebody personally. Attacking their character instead of discussing the issues. You know, like if I were to call them names like, p#ssy, a$$hole, or paranoid.
I notice you didn't call your confessed headgame playing moderator on such things and you felt no compunction about doing a little name calling of your own. "Sauce for the goose..."

Yeah, I just want to fight. That's why I've taken the time to try and make sure this thread stayed civil and nobody went away with hard feelings.
I type about 80 words per minute, it doesn't take as long as you might think. As to my free time, yeah. I've got a fair amount of it, I can afford it, and I like it that way. Today, I'm going to go to the range and then later, my wife and I are going to go to the lake for a cookout, working on our tans, and swimming. You jealous or something?
Funny how you never seemed to mind my "excessive" post lengths when you agreed with me though.
Yeah, I guess you're right. Suddenly I'm starting to feel pretty superior to you.

When proven wrong, some people accept the proof, learn, and become smarter and wiser for the experience. Others just take it as an insult. Go figure.
But I don't think I'll accept your kind invitation just yet, there are actually quite a few folk here who's posts I enjoy reading and responding to.
If you want to ban me, you are of course free to do so. Doing so however, will say a hell of a lot more about you than it does about me.
Either way, I'm done with this thread. You won't use reason and I can't use force so there's nothing further to say to you or broom the confessed headgamer and sh!t disturber. |

WoW ... how did this thread get so off topic?
I understand and respect both arguments for the use of lethal weapons for home defense. It's a personal decision and should be respected as such.
Back on topic ...
Using airguns for home defense is a "double edged sword" ....
On one hand, there are some wicked looking airguns that could act as a visual deterant BUT that same wicked looking airgun could also cause an armed intruder to feel that their life is being threatened and retaliate with lethal force!
Something to think about.

Your timeframe is incorrect, I used the term 'paranoid' and you had some sort of temper-tantrum thinking it was referring to you. The term was not actually applied to anyone here- so who was the object of this "insult", exactly?
Apparently it is now your mindset to somehow rationalize how you were correct in your assumption that you were being called paranoid.
It was after this that Buster pulls out his DSM IV manual to define 'paranoid'.

In case you hadn't noticed, "retard" has not been politically correct for quite some time. Yes, it is now used as a perjorative term not completely in-line with the underlaying clinical definition. Get used to it- this is how language evolves. Also, for the point of mentioning it, I don't believe the term "retard" is actually a defined term in the DSM, I believe the condition of 'retardation' and "retarded" were at one point described. 'Retard' in and of itself is a societally-applied term/label- so you have actually proved my point despite believing you are contradicting it.

I see, your instigation of the discussion criteria by claiming to know what motivates others; "sour grapes", in respect to other people's comments- they "don't know" what they're talking about, and your condescending tone and furtherance of the idea that people are just stupid; "you should be very sure you know exactly what you're talking about. And you very obviously don't" are what, precisely? While technically they are not all ad hominem arguments, each and every one of them is a representation of an illogical argument aimed at taking away from the person posting it, not addressing the issue itself. This is a common technique used by those that like to believe in their own superiority and as a "baiter" to attempt to crank up the volume level of an argument, for what end we can only speculate. Maybe you should also berate people when they make typos and tell them to learn English- your rigidity without compromise on virtually everything grows tiring.
| Buster Bodine wrote: |

Correct, once someone opens the box on name calling and sideways-deriding of others here, the belt gets loosened a bit. You are also correct that when you choose to focus upon me with this sort of BS, the belt indeed gets further loosened. I may not be able to actively defend everyone else, but I certainly will defend myself as applicable.
| Buster Bodine wrote: |

Incorrect. Your recent attack on 'Snowbunny' for no apparent reason (I think you actually had him confused with another person) was noted and whether or not it warranted some sort of Moderation/Censor was considered. But again with the irrelevant, slanted additions to the topic? Have you no better way to communicate with people?
| Buster Bodine wrote: |

Now what is that statement supposed to mean? I am well aware of what I am "free to do". Never was you being banned mentioned, or otherwise brought up. So- why do you bring it up?
I can only imagine it is another attempt at "baiting" and trying to push me into a corner. If I don't ban- you can claim you were victorious in the grand debate, if I do ban you, then you can claim you hold the higher moral ground. Very creative of you, but nonetheless it is both transparent and irrelevant as I will do as I do either way.
In this case I have a thick skin. I am also now fully aware of your technique- which will be monitored in your comments with other users- any further sideways insults at others and you will be censored/banned as would be appropriate for anyone acting in such a manner- despite the fact I had been a bit flexible with you in this respect previously and let some things slide that perhaps I should not have. |

A dull sword at that. All guns are tools. I won't join the discussion about perception and evaluation of threats, but if a situation warrants the immediate and certain elimination of a threat, an airgun is not the right tool. |

+1
Using an airgun for home defense would essentially be trying to bluff your way out of a life or death situation.
Not a good idea.

Slavia: please do not disregard high powered bigbores, as we all know are designed for hunting things like deer, boar, BEAR, feral goats, coyotes, BISON... and so on.
I remember reading where a .458 450+/- grain hollowpoint made a through and through on a medium-small sized bear.
A 400gr slug moving 600fps is about 319fpe. A .45 auto with 230gr ball is moving about 850fps- about 350fpe. .45 auto is a very popular self defense cartridge because of its stopping power...
No doubt in my mind that a good bigbore will stop someone in their tracks. |

You can also hunt deer, boar, bear, etc. with a bow and arrow but it wouldn't be my first choice for home defense.

I dunno, I could load my talon in ten seconds. Yeah it's only one shot, but at close range, being such a powerful airgun to begin with, the effect of being shot in the head would be noticeable....such as the intruder noticing how he is no longer living.
Don't get me wrong, airguns are not for use against humans, nor for self defense. But they ain't toys either. They can kill you even accidentally, let alone if your intent is to do maximum harm with it. |
