Hi guys,
Newbie here ... Smile

Common sense tells me that leaving a charged CO2 cartridge (powerlet) in your gun when not in use is probably not a good idea and may cause unnecessary stress on the seals. Am I right?

The seals aren't really "stressed" by Co2- seals are generally a compression idea of some sort- i.e. a gasket. About the worst that can happen is that a seal takes on the shape of something pressured against it excessively for long periods of time. If you keep the seals lubed, this is less likely to occur.

Of course the question is- if you are done shooting and still have half a 12g caplet of Co2 in the gun- is wasting it, perhaps every time you shoot, more economical than if you need to replace a seal at some point? Realistically, I think a Co2 caplet set up against a seal would need to sit there for an extended period of time before it would damage/;malform the seal (i.e. many weeks).

Thanks Eric.

btw ... I've read that your not suppose to "lube" seals (ie. "O" rings).
I've read you're just suppose to replace them when they go bad.
Is this true?

If not, what type of lube do you recommend?

Definitely don't use petroleum based lubricants on the seals, as it will degrade them. A silicone lubricant (like Crosman PelGun "oil")will keep them pliable. A drop on the cap of the CO2 ampule should be enough.

What about emptying the co2 cannister prematurely? With 88 gram cannisters, you can shoot a crapload of shots before losing power, but it still has a lot of juice left in it. The other day I decided to take out the co2 since the power was so low, and I dry fired it like 30 times until my finger got sore in order to release as much co2 as possible. Then I slowly unscrewed it and it shot out mist and vapor like the thing was full. Took like two or three minutes to finally empty out, and the gun was like frozen at that point.

Does the quick release of the gas around the seal degrade it too? I think it sucks to have to keep shooting it and wasting ammo when its only putting it shots out there at like 200 fps.

Check pelgunoil- it is a petroleum-based lube- thus why they only recommend it for their pumpers and Co2 guns. They have a silicone lube called "Silicone Chamber Oil" for springers. The thing of it is, gun manufacturers are supposed to have stopped using o-rings/seals that are affected by petroleum/petroleum distillates, although I guess you never know until it's too late!
