With my house being mere feet away from a 500 acre cornfield, you can imagine how many squirrel are around. Every day I see 20-30 squirrels ( Not even looking for them ). I occasionally pop a few to rid them from my gardens, and I make squirrel gravy!
Well I figured Id like use as much of the animal as possible. I am going to start saving the furs, and tanning them. I have been a hunter for years, and have tanned a few deer hides. I just recently discovered this " Brain Tanning " method. I am really into our " hunting roots" and love primitive ways ( Making my own recurve and arrows and downing deer ). The brain tanning seems like it would be a very fun, rewarding expirience to prepare an animal the way my ancestors have for thousands of years. Its awesome that an animal once killed has a home tanning kit sitting inside its skull.
Has anyone else done this? Whats your prefered method?
Also, What do you all do with your furs? Any cool ideas? |

I've never tanned, but I have salted and boraxed hides before. Just makes them hard instead of soft. I have read about brain tanning before and it does sound cool, although time consuming and messy.
The only thing I ever made with a fur was a sheath for a knife. And I did a piss poor job of it.
And you can't tan a squirrell with its own brain, I think you need a larger brained animal for that.
btw, what kind of tree rats are they? Probably fox squirrels? |

The squirrels are suppose to have enough brains, from what Ive been reading every animal from squirrels to deer have enough brain matter to tan there own pelts. the only game that doesnt is a buffalo, which lacks the certain oils in the brains which soften and preserve the hide.
In my area we have an abundance of Grey and fox squirrels. We even see a few black squirrels, and I have a picture somewhere of a solid white one that was caught on a trail cam, Ill try to find it. |

| I have heard that there was a fly tying company that used to buy any squirrel tails, I don't know if they still do it though? |

Wouldnt that be a huge waste of natural resources, I dont think theirs anyway you could kill 100 Squirrel and then put use to all of them. I believe your only supposed to kill what you need, and eat what you kill. |
I need money. |
