| Wow, 42 replies to this topic and we have hardly touched the subject. |
O.K., so anyway....
Hunting is too complex to be defined by a skill set. Purpose and ethics have to be included, also. The same skill set would apply to food gathering, pest control, habitat management, sport (trophy) hunting, and simple blood lust (where you go blast anything alive because you like killing). Maybe, like cholesterol, there is "good" hunting and also "bad" hunting.
Here's something I found:
LEGAL VERSUS ETHICAL
Hunting is an intensely personal experience fraught with personal choices. Consider the contrast between what is legal and what is ethical. It is difficult to conceive of a situation in hunting where the commission of an illegal act could be considered ethical. But, the inverse is not only possible, but also common. In short, legality describes the outside boundaries within which ethical choices are made.http://www.huntfairchase.com/index.php/fuseaction/ethics.now
FAIR CHASE STATEMENT
FAIR CHASE, as defined by the Boone and Crockett Club, is the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of any free-ranging wild, native North American big game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper advantage over such animals.http://www.boone-crockett.org/huntingEthics/ethics_fairchase.asp?area=huntingEthics
Notice that ethics here are not described as a rigid moral code to be imposed on a hunter. They are instead the limits an individual hunter imposes on himself within the legal "outer boundaries."
O.K., your turn(s). Comments? |

(Taken from that link:)
"hiding for the purpose of taking or attempting to take game animals and game birds; and walking, crawling or advancing toward wildlife while possessing implement or equipment useful in the taking of game animals or game birds.”
Roger hides in his house, and the phone was a useful implement, so he's golden in North Dakota. |

Nah you guys got it all wrong. Airgun Hunting= Driving around to big box stores, outfitters, sporting goods retailers looking for that Diana or Daystate rifle you saw in the magazines. Only upon scouring through the stores do you find they only carry Gamo's and Crosmans. Thus you go home and use Google to find that you actually want a different airgun which you now have to 'hunt' around hundreds of websites trying to find the best deal.
This boys is Airgun Hunting...period!
But all joking aside. Hunting with airguns is the same as hunting with a knife, with dogs(or what have you), powder burners, bow and arrow, slingshots, or any kind of gun to dispatch quarry or game. Whether its for thrills, food, skins, etc there is the ethical way and the non-ethical way. Granted the lines drawn can and could be crossed, but its the ultimate resposibility of the individual to know that the line has been crossed, or in some cases that there is actually a line there. Anyone can hunt, but not everyone is a hunter. That being said a hunter is really more of a conservationist. In the sense that you want the game you hunt to thrive so you can hunt them another day. You also would take care of the grounds you hunt in, so it will be there for your children and so forth. The whole hunt is not malicious and a certain respect is formed between the man and the animal. A malicious hunt would be deemed pest control or a revenge killing. Killing not hunting. While this does have its place, this would not be considered hunting. A good example would be a shark attack. People would send out a horde of boats to seek and kill the shark that attacked. While the act of searching for the shark could be deemed as 'hunting' the shark, the physical act of killing it would not make the killer of the shark a hunter. I might call them a hero. I might call them a murderer. I would never call them a hunter.
That being said. I do hunt. I do consider myself a hunter. I do engage in pest control. I have killed a pest out of revenge(dont ask). I have shot birds that are considered pests just for the sake of shooting a bird. I have shot that feral cat that likes to leave its paw prints on the hood of my car. Am I perfect? Of course not. Would I consider the act of stalking said prey hunting? Of course. Would I consider myself a hunter in all of the above mentioned? Probably not. But as it says in that great book that nobody likes to talk about nowadays, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." |

Bless me Father for I have sinned… Shooting that poor Dove out of season… just because he was in my back yard and disrupted my target practice…
And bless the starving Pigmy’s in New Guinea…
Dominus prosperous post mortem carborundum…
Get r' done! |

I've pretty much held my tounge....ok. Let me remind us all however that as Christ said "let the one without sin cast the first stone." He then turned to the woman accused by the crowd and said, "go and sin no more."
In answer to the question this thread is about: "
Precisly what is air gum hunting?"
The answer is, it's hunting....with an air gun. |

And then there are those that go to the sporting goods retailer and accept the clerk's assurance that the "XYZ-99 Speziale" will drop an 1800 pound bear at 500 yards. So maybe airgun hunting per se is simply the act of knowing enough to ask the "right" questions and then to find personal answers for them. |

They won't? Crap, $34.99 wasted. |

i still went hunting. thou i did not kill.

I suddenly imagine how inconvenient it is to shoot a bear with a .177 $34.99 rifle. Apart from the fact that it won't kill the bear in one shot, reloading would be a real pain in the a$$ while trying to run from said bear. Remember how fiddly those things sometimes are.
