| I have a question about dispatching skunks.I have a family member who has a few skunks that like to hang out under the back deck, and come out at night.I have a Ruger airhawk in .177. 1000fps.What would be a good pellet for this? The reason I ask is that I got one last year with a 12 gauge slug, and it basically exploded! It was all good until I went out the next morning, and noticed that part of the pelt was stuck to the side of the house!Don't want to get out the pressure washer again.!Whats a good .177 pellet for a nice clean head shot kill? |

When trying to dispatch a critter, it's not just a matter of fps. It has more to do with fpe (foot pound of energy) at the target. Of which, a .22 is better at then a .177. Without starting the .177 vs .22 debate yet again, is it possible to kill a skunk with a .177. You will of course need to find the heaviest pellet you can find in this caliber. I believe it's Beeman that makes a 10gr .177 kodiak. I "think" it's eun jin that makes a 12gr .177 pellet as well.
Keep in mind though a heavier pellet won't be traveling as fast nor will it have the same range as a lighter one. This means you're going to have to get close to those skunks in order to make a good head shot kill. I'd also like to add, in this caliber, I would in now way attempt a body shot. The thick hair and fat layer underneath would slow it down too much to make it leathal. Nothing worse then injuring an animal and have to hear/see it go through a long painful death.
Just a word of caution though, being as close as you will need to Mr. Pepe Le Pew, and if you miss...I REALLY hope you can run fast!!! And if it's Mrs. Le Pew with any lil Pews around...you best be an olympic sprinter!!!! |

eun jins in .177 are 16 grain. your springer will not get these fast enough for skunk. a springer develops the highest fpe with pellets in the middle weight range. 8 grain for .177. 14-15 in .22.
you will need .22. something 20fpe+. this is what i know from this forum.
personally i debate medium powered AG's on an animal that big as i've killed raccon at near point blank with a .22 LR hollowpoint (headshot between the eyes) and it still ran 20 feet before falling. this was 36 grains @ 1300 fps.
i'm sure someone will challenge me. just my personal opinion! |

| A skunk isn't that large, and if you are a good shot and the rifle in question is consistent, you could get mid-size skunks with a .177 10.xgr pellet, of which there are a few- Crosman has two, one labelled as a Benjamin Discovery pellet, the other a Crosman Ultra Magnum, Beeman has one or two, H&N I believe has one as well. Try to stick to a pointed or hollow-point pellet. |

I would add...lure them with bait away from the house and pets and children.
Most likely they will spray no matter where you shoot them...head, body, little toe. And the "end" result will be a very pungent one.
Even live-trap them away from the house in an area you can shoot them. Then, when they settle down...pow, right in the kisser. |

| I seen a coon shot at point blank range with a 1000 fps .177 and it still took a couple minutes to die. I don't think .177 is suitable for anything larger than a bunny. |

Well, some might also argue that .177 is not suitable for a bunny, but as I always say, shoot what you got. It's the indian, not his arrows that do the killing. |

No challenge from me here.I agree with you from what other have said.I just ordered a Gamo Whisper in .22 with some crow magnums. That should work! |

you'll get max 575-600 fps with crow mags.
still don't think that's enough. |

Then I'll have to get some Gamo PBA's and bump it up to about 950. |

opinion:
pba is a crap marketing ploy by gamo. i'm surprised very few people are chiming in on this thread.
there is a balance between fps/fpe which has a narrow margin with springers....
pneumatics work well with heavier pellets. pumpers/pcp
springers run well in the middle pellet weight...
www.airgunweb.com
look at the review on the gamo whisper.
it's a 15fpe rilfe no matter what you feed it! |

Why not? It's the retained energy in the pellet that matters. Those .50 cal Korean airguns shoot at around 300fps, but I think we can all be reasonably certain they will kill a mid-size animal like a large dog. All someone has to do is penetrate the skull or neck with the projectile, not drive it so fast it comes out the other side. |

I put my vote in for the .44 magnum. "It's the most powerful handgun in the world, it will blow your head clean off!"
If you keep the whisper then use some crosman premier hollowpoint. They should get the max power out of a mid-high powered springer. |
