I may not be able to buy parts or do the actual work on my 2300 project, but I can ask more questions, which I can add to my notes.

I've been wondering, since I've got this bizzar idea of making my own muzzle break, are the crosman custom barrels simlar to say the 1077 barrles where you have a fake shroud looking barrel hiding the actual barrel.

I'm hoping it's not, because I want the ablity to thread the end of the barrel for my adjustable break. If it's not what size is the barrel? I need to go through my grand father's bit's of dies and taps and check all my drill bits see if I've got the right combo's to do what I wanna do.

13-XX/22-XX barrels do not have a shroud, and are easily threaded. They are 7/16" dia. for either caliber, and will fit fine on your 22/XX based 2300.

doc, I am a habitual notekeeper, and just for confirmation you say the Cros. 1377 barrel has a 7/16th outside diameter, correct? Building a custom 1377 and I appreciate you sharing the information. Thanks, woodhippy

Doc is correct, all the 22xx/13xx barrels are 7/16" in outer diameter and can be threaded or even cut down- there is a fair amount of meat on them.

Thanks AirGunEric, appreciate the confirmation. Aluminum stock, taps and dies, and a guy could fabricate all kinds of neat little things. ?????????????????????????????????

Can someone answer this for me then? I took the plastic front site off my 2300. There's a slight "notch" along the top of the barrel. Do I need to cut the barrel behind this in order to be able to thread it with a die?

If you are threading the muzzle end, then yes, probably better to cut off the 'land' for the front sight so you threading goes all the way around.

Don't forget to re-crown it once you're done.

See, that's what I don't understand. You call it a "land", but there's no notch inside the front site. It's perfectly smooth. Looks more like where someone used a wrench to perhaps screw it into the reciever? (I'm not sure if it does or doesn't, haven't taken it fully apart yet, but that's what it looks like to me.) Not withstanding it's not "straight", the notch is slightly skewed to one side.

Any suggestions on how to cut it? I don't have a band saw, and I really doubt I can cut it square using a jig or recipical saw. Crowning would be easier if my dremel hadn't grown legs along with my camera, seems both disappeared about the same time last year when some workmen were remodling the house.

Wouldn't I need to reblue the end of the barrel too, since I'll be exposing raw metal? Don't want all my efforts to start rusting!!!

Take a piece of masking tape and wrap it around the barrel to mark the cutting point. Keep adjusting the angle of the tape until the edges exactly meet when they wrap around on themselves:

Cut the barrel to the taped line with a hacksaw, bandsaw, or saber saw. Then chuck the breech end in a drill and while it's spinning, lightly touch the muzzle (cut) end to a grinding wheel or sander - that will make the face as perpendicular as you can get without a lathe. Follow up (while spinning) with progressively finer grits of abrasive cloth until you get the finish you want.

Then use the drill to polish the crown using a round head brass screw and abrasive compound. You can use automotive paint rubbing compound, valve lapping compound, buffing wheel abrasive mashed up in a little oil, or even toothpaste:

Cold blue should work just fine on a surface that small to finish up.

Thanks Salvia! I'll keep all that in mind when the time comes and I have the cash. Some of those tools I don't have right now. But the future is looking really good!
