I was dozing off last night around 10 pm when I noticed my neighbors dog barking. Having been long accustomed to the habits of inconsiderate neighbors, I realized it meant they were not home and their dogs were locked outside. No biggie, right?
Well, I wake up 7 HOURS later to, guess what? A dog barking! Me being the only intelligent neighbor around here, I took it upon myself to actually investigate why a dog would be barking for half a day straight.
I went into the alley and looked over their privacy fence. Two dogs were running around, but one looked somehow attached to a patio chair that was overturned. And that was the dog that was barking.
All the gates were locked to the backyard and the neighbors' mail and recycle bin was sitting out, which means they've been gone for at least two days! I now realized this was an animal neglect situation.
The bad news is they were three pitbulls, but the good news is I am not afraid of pitbulls, since I've had them myself. So I just came back home and I armed myself with doggie treats and headed back over. I scaled their fence and made my way past two VERY excited dogs to the one stuck to the chair.
The one on the chair was the "big one" and it was not helping me to free it. It was tied up to a choker cable that it had wrapped around the patio furniture making a twisted mess leaving it no slack. I worked on freeing it for a few minutes and I could see its eyes were bloodshot a deep red from the hours of futile struggling and choking it had endured. And it was making its situation worse as I tried to help it loose.
I finally got it loose and the dogs seem to be okay. I fed them some treats and they have a pool back there to drink out of if need be. But later this morning I'll have to call animal protection services and report this. I can't fathom what is going on over there to compell them to leave their dogs out like that. |

Bleh, why do people even get a dog if they don't take care of em...
You obviously did the right thing there. I sure hope that those dogs will be given a bit of a better life. No living creature deserves to suffer, especially when people are supposed to take care of them. |

Well, the dog owner is still a no show. I tried to talk to other neighbors to see if they knew what was up but they didn't know much more than me. I gained access to the guys' back gate so I can freely go in and out now and feed and water his dogs.
This guy didn't seem like the sort to take off and leave his dogs. His house is pretty nice and he has all this mail and stuff sitting outside, so clearly he, nor anyone else, has been to his house in the last two days. The neighbors did say that he parks his truck outside, and it is gone. So I don't think anyone is in the house, since I initially suspected foul play and thought he may be inside dead or incapacitated.
Maybe the guy is in jail or in the hospital...or even dead. I don't know. All I know is that those dogs require a human to keep them alive. I can do that for a couple days if need be. I just don't want to report it yet because I know they'll just come and take the dogs and the guy may never see them again...and they might have to be put down if they can't find a home for them.
Who knows what happened to the guy, it may not even be his fault. And I don't want to be the reason why someone loses their dogs, you know what I mean?
I feel really bad about all this. Not sure how I should be handling it. |

Roger,
I understand how you feel. To most people a pet is part of the family. Having said that though, how many people would leave young helpless children on their own for any length of time?
You also mentioned the fact that they are pitbulls, and that you had one too. This may also be weighing in on your inablity to make a decision. You know as well as many other's know that some breeds of dogs get a certain reputation just because of a few instances. And because of this those dogs could be the most lovable animals on the planet. But because of their breed's reputation they could put down for no good reason....
I therefore suggest calling a pitbull rescue group FIRST before calling local humane/cruelty agency. Get them involved so there's someone there to "represent" the animals. You're state/county animal control may just use their powers to sieze the animals and then hand them over to a pitbull rescue group immediatly. |

Money is all ways good... We would hope to have another pup with the same temperment... So he can have a buddy... He is soo good with other dogs, cats, kids and people... I have no problem taking him to the pet or hardware stores... Everyone he meets... loves him... He is very socialized...
One of our firends that was attacked by a pit as a child and was understandably nervious. But now she has had her healing moments with him and trust Rico around her 1 year old. Rico calms right down and is very gentle with the baby... only licks her and keeps his paws down. |

Now it is Sunday afternoon. Still no sign of the neighbor and his voicemail is full
The dogs are fed and watered, however, they are disgustingly filthy. Their entire yard is covered in feces. I tried to go clean some of it up but there is so much and it is just nasty. As much as I'd like to help these pups, I REALLY feel like its not my responsibility to de-shitt my neighbors yard.
I have the male back in my yard now. I rinsed him off, but he still smells like 3 day old used condom. I actually had to spray his back and butt with Off just to keep the flies from swarming on him.
I found some pitbull rescue sites, but ironically, they are all about how to obtain a rescued dog--not how to get them rescued. But I think animal control works with these resue agencies, so maybe once I call them they will work with those organizations to try to find a way not to have to put these dogs down. |
