| Somebody tried to break into my garage last night and my great Pyrenees got ahold of one of them. My garage looks like a slaughterhouse, and I didn't know blood smelled that bad. They arrested him on the way to the hospital and a buddy on the sheriff's dept said it took 54 stitches to put him back together. My dog apparently got the leg below the knee, and the guy bled like a stuck pig. He also told me that the guy will probably have a limp afterwards. I'm just glad I had beware of dog and no trespassing signs up so my butt is covered. I just never expected my dog to react like that. He is so gentle with kids. He has never even growled at anything before. It's gonna take me forever to get the blood offf of him and off the garage floor. My wife heard him screaming and called the sheriff and I went out to see what was going on. He's back to being the gentle giant again. He and I played ball this morning and everything. No growls, no nothing. Anybody else ever have something like this happen to them? |

| If that's a true story it's fricking awesome. I love that the criminal got mauled AND caught, but I like even more that your dog is all fierce and protective when it needs to be, but nice and gentle every other time. |

| It's made me really leery about letting other people around him now. I don't want a little kid or one of my friends getting bit. He was easy for the sheriff to catch though. The dog bit him so badly that he probably wouldn't have been able to walk.I've been cleaning him up with peroxide to bleach his fur back out to white, and I think I figured out why he bit the guy. He's got a cut in his head that looks like the guy hit him with something. It looks like it needs stitches so I am going to take him to the vet in a half hour. Have to wait till the vet is in her office. |

i have had several break in attempts into my garage over the years. each time i heard/saw the kids on the surveillance cameras long before the dogs did. last time, i chased the dumb f*ckers up the street in the snow in nothing but my boxers and boots!!! i say dumb f*ckers, cause they ran straight to their parents house!!! a knock on the door and a call to the cops later and the kids were cuffed and taken away.
Todd... get your hero to the vet and stitched up, then buy him some treats from all of us here!!! |

Yeah, he probably hit the dog after it was already attacking him. And if you know dogs, that just works them up even more.
I hope your dog is ok. Hey, update the police report and file a claim for the vet bills which he will be responsible for. You might be able to get him for a destruction of property too for injuring the dog. Unfortunately, the law views pets a property only, so it would be a charge of destruction of private property. But if he broke in, he's probably already got those charges against him.
My friend has a really nice pitbull (nice to adults), but he looks really scary. He actually IS scary, because he has mauled other dogs and recently, a young boy. The boy was ok, and it turns out he was provoking the dog. So the dog was not put down or anything.
I'd be leery of letting him around children at this point. It is true that once a dog attacks humans, it is a danger. But sounds like you just have a good loyal dog, so you probably just want to be cautious about who you let him around, but don't worry about it too much. |

| Okay, the vet is keeping him till tomorrow just to make sure he doesn't have a fractured skull and his brain doesn't swell form the impact. I was watching her stitch him up and it was skull bone showing after she cleaned it out. I'd like to get ahold of the bastard that broke into my garage. I'd show him what getting hit upside the head would feel like. The vet told me that she had close to the same thing a while back. A dog was injured by an intruder. She said I can also sue the guy for hitting my dog and the cost of repairs on my door. At least he did and won. |

| How did he get caught then? Was he busted while still in your garage or was he limping away when the cops got to him? |

Todd,
You have a hero living with the family. You never know about idiots breaking in. How often have we heard in the news, some innocent person being killed so some crack head could steal the owner's tv or cd player?
I wouldn't be too concerned about your dog either when it comes to him being around friends and family. Actually in your dog's mind he is part of that family and was protecting his "pack" when he attacked the intruders.
I think just about anyone that's been around a lab know what gentile giants these dogs can be. Yet my late Gino, if hear heard someone coming up the stairs, or cutting through our yard, he'd go nuts. Because this was his family and his territory he had to protect.
Hope you dog is well, treat him like a king for a week, but don't let it go to his head! <G> |

Okay, here's how it went. My wife heard something so she went to check out the window. When she did she could hear the guy screaming. She yelled at me, and I went out with a baseball bat while she dialed 911. The sheriff got here while Bailey (that's one of my dogs) was gnawing on the guy. I literally can see the sheriff's office form my back fence, so they were here in about 5 minutes.
Meanwhile bailey wouldn't let go. I grabbed bailey's collar and pulled with everything I had, and bailey still wouldn't let go of the guy. It took me both hands on his collar with everything I had to get bailey off of him. The sheriff arrived and they took over from there while I was still trying to hold bailey who kept lunging at the guy like he was ready for more. I drug him outside and put him in the fence. The sheriff wouldn't come in the garage until I got bailey out of it. Then they called an ambulance, which was coming from right next door of the sheriff's office.
I was busy with trying to keep bailey from getting to anybody else so I didn't get to talk to anyone after that. My wife said they handcuffed the guy and the squad put a compression wrap around the guy's leg because he was bleeding so badly. Then they hauled him off and took a statement from my wife. They took about a million pictures of my garage door and the floor where the blood puddle was. By the time I got bailey calmed down, they were wanting to see him, so I took them into the house so they could look out the back window at him because I was scared to death he would bite somebody because of the frenzy that he was in.
So, it's 1 o'clock in the morning, I have 3 deputies trying to take pictures of my dog through the open window, and what looks like cujo in my back yard covered with blood. The deputy wanted to cite me for the dangerous animal code, when I told him that bailey wasn't on the code for vicious dogs, because he wasn't a pit bull or chow or rottie, which are some of the dogs on this ordinance. I finally had to get in my fireproof box and get out his AKC papers to prove he was a great pyrenees.
Now the deputies made enough noise to wake up all 3 of my boys, and I didn't get them back to sleep until about 3:30. So, after 2 million pictures, and about the same amount of questions they finally leave, I get my cordless drill out to run some screws into the door till today and I go back to bed.
Now I have to go get a new door(which will be steel) and mop up the blood in the garage because it really stinks in there. I'm just glad bailey didn't go for the guys throat because he is big enough to reach that high. |

todd,
that's a story for "the armed citizen" section of guns and ammo! armed with a great pyrenese that is. amazing!!!
i was burgled 14 years ago, a neighborhood bastard kid (i knew the family) got off with an ak-47 and a couple handguns. cops never did a thing, not even question him. too bad i had no dogs at that time.
is this going to make your local news? put up the link if it does!!
that is the post of all posts on the b.s. topic!!!!! |

| Just a word of caution if you post a copy of any news paper report... black out name, adress and anything else personal. While I think every one here is pretty great and all, you never know who is lurking... Hope I don't sound too paranoid. |
