I can finally get more in the target than out and I get an occasional group

I have to lay my left hand out flat just past the trigger lay the forearm down on my hand and put my middle finger where the forearm splits. Then with the other hand finger on the trigger and just touching with the thumb.

The bottom point of the but has to be just poking the meaty part of my chest just inside and above my arm pit.

I am starting to think that I don't like the fiber optic sights either. At least not the red ones. The windage is way to the left and there was no wind today. Is there an adjustment to get this back on center or am I just shooting way off?

Could I use the end sight and change the front sight? Maybe a peep sight?

Try turning the little wheel on the top left rear of the rear sight.... the one beside the notch.... Wink

Some rifles are more hold sensitive than others. If you could provide us with the make, model, caliber and how much use this rifle has had, we may be able to offer more specific advice.

Since no mention was made, my first suggestion would be to try shooting from a rest rather than off-hand, if you are not already doing so.

In regards to windage, the nice photo does show the rear sight blade notch offset to the left. Adjusting the rear sight notch to the shooters right will shift the point of pellet impact to the right using the adjacent adjusting wheel/knob as the previous poster, rsterne, has indicated. Look closely, and you will likely see an arrow and the letters "L" and "R" on the face of the rear sight adjusting knob.

Once the suggested info is supplied we could be more specific.

Also, study the suggestions made by others on the thread titled: "Can't group my springer".

I would assume from his bragline that it is
a .22 caliber Crosman Quest 800x.

I have a storm which is pretty close to the quest in a lot of ways. I found the exact opposite of how you are supposed to shoot a springer. I pull it in tight, grab it right in front of the trigger guard(think Olympian biathlon) and I group about 1/2 inch at 25 yds. That's on a good day anyway. This gun with the right kind of pellets(benjamin hollowpoints for me) is more accurate than me.

I pulled the top part off the sight. The part that bolts to the rifle is not mounted squarely. That must be why it looks so far off.

It is
a .22 caliber Crosman Quest 800x. It has about 1500 pellets shot through it.

I think I would still like a peep sight. When you order one of those do the mounts come blank so that you can drill the holes to fit the holes on the gun already?

I am some what visually challenged. I need reading glasses to see things up close. With out my glasses the red dots are a blur.With them the yellow dot and the target are a blur. Would a peep sight have to mount closer to my eye?

These are the pellets that I have tried so far. They are in order ov how well I think they shoot. The ones in bold are what I can get without going through the mail.

The Daisy are not even the same size on both sides of the skirt. I will not buy them again. I will use them to shoot milk jugs at about 20 meters.

The gamo some are tight in the breach and have to be pushed in and some drop in. I wont try these again either.

A peep sight would need to be nearer than an iron sight, but would be easier to use for target shooting in good light.

Hey CW, a later post confirmed your assumption. I saw the bragline but did not want to assume it was in fact the rifle in question since the initial post had so little detail.

Perhaps rsterne and I both figured a sight adjustment might help since the posted target results showed a general string to the left along with sight offset in the same direction.

Something not mentioned in some of the later sight-in threads is length of pull. I have seen shot strings go left when the length of pull is too long and go right when length of pull is too short.

It is difficult to diagnose a problem from afar. Shocked

I was shooting today. It was 24 degrees out there and the wind was about ten mph.

I did make the trigger pull a bit longer. I do catch myself jerking and sending one off to the right. I sat on a bucket and put my elbow on my knee. I will have to set up some kind of rest. These pellets are not the best but I want to shoot them up. Out of 50 shots only 11 were outside the last ring.

I will get back out after it warms up. I will switch to the Benjamin Discovery Hollow point .22 14.3 Grains and see what I can do.

It did tighten up a little. I still have a long way to go.

These pellets are very hard I have an old barrel lid in the back of my pellet trap and these pellets don't squish mutch at all.
They mostly fit the breach the same there were 2 in 50 that fit loose.

I have the Beeman sight on my HW77. I got the sight in the mid 80's and have had it on 4 different guns. No need to drill and tap, it clamps on to the dovetail milled into the top of the receiver of your rifle. A Leapers 3-9X32 scope would work nice on that gun with Accushot medium mounts. The Mendoza is good for the price, the Beeman is a lot more expensive but the quality is better...mines 22 years old and works perfect! If you need any help, PM me!

Aperture sights do indeed offer precision. Just be aware that they need a well lit target (not much light comes through that tiny hole), and target acquisition will be slower than with other sights. On the plus side, it's easier for the human eye/brain to align fuzzy concentric circles than fuzzy posts and notches.

It also helps to shoot open sights through an iris. This is nothing more than a pinhole, but it helps bring both sights into focus at the same time. You can experiment with this without plunking down a lot of money. Just get a piece of dark plastic out of the recycling (like an antifreeze jug). Heat a sewing pin, and push it through the plastic. Take a sharp knife and cut off the melted plastic around the pinhole so the hole is nice and clean. Then clip or tape the pinhole to your regular (or perhaps safety) glasses so you can look down the sights with it.
