I tried a REALLY quick test with lubed pellets.

I took some of my .177 RWS superdomes and put them in a screw top pellet tin (about 100). Put a nice squirt of Hoppes 9 on them and closed it up. I rolled it around for a minute and flipped them over a couple times to liberally coat all pellets.

Let them sit, and cleaned my D34 barrel, so I would start fresh.

Started off fresh with UNLUBED ones, sighted my gun in roughly and started shooting about 5/8" c-t-c groups at 20 yards.

Then I started using the lubed ones. I gave it 10 shots to start lubing the barrel, the first 3 were fliers. It settled to the DIFFERENT groups, of about 1/4" c-t-c. The catch being 3 different groups, which were about 3/4" c-t-c all together.

I hypothesize that if I kept shooting these my groups would close up to one large group of maybe 1/2" c-t-c. That would be a nice improvement over 3/4"-7/8".

You could lightly lube the pellets even for a springer. I thought the main reason you lube pellets is to continually lube the bore and clean it after each shot?

Aren't match pellets often lubed before a match?

I don't really know if lube helps them or not.I did try this on a few pellets and it might have been a bad idea,but I use 3-in-1 oil and I did'nt see anything different exept my fingers got a little oil on them.

Probly should've use different oil or pellet lube,but I was more concerned about the black stuff on my fingers from the CP pellets so I cleaned them real good.No lube now.

I bet if I washed the cheap Crosmans they would oxidize. Someone told me they have a graphite coating.

I can't remember his name but he made the uber expensive twin piston springers. He recommended a 50/50 mix of Hoppe's gun oil and STP as a pellet lube. Personally, I don't bother as lead is a good lubricant by itself until it builds up to a point where your accuracy declines and then just pull some patches through your bore until clean.

If you choose to lube your pellets, the foam in can method is best and don't go overboard as you want the exterior of the pellets lubed, not the insides of the skirt.

ok, if you got a high powered springer..say 850 fps and up; DON't use petroleum based lubes to lube your pellets! Can you say BOOM! Yup, detonation will happen and the death of your spring and seal starts. My friend uses FP10 for his pellets in PCP guns. I shot some in my R1 and they clocked 820 fps....Kodiaks in 177 cal. and for the next 3-5 shots they blasted out CPL's about 30 fps faster than normal! The oil residue in the barrel providing the boost. Washed off the oil and they shoot 785 fps. If you MUST lube pellets for use in a springer, use Krytec, it's a chain lube made by Finish Line and can be found in most bike shops. Or you can get it from MAC1; comes with the pull thru cleaning package. I also had the same results using the FP10 lubed Kodiaks in my R7 and that's a lower powered gun! So just stay away from oils. I never lube my pellets, haven't seen the difference...I can't shoot THAT good! And I am lazy!
