| Ok i got my brand new RWS P5 Pistol yesterday. Its sweet and i love it but made the mistake of leaving it around freinds and they dry fired it like 5 times..(i could hear them from inside). Now i wonder if my new baby may be damaged. Is there a way to check the piston to see if it slammed in the chamber and damaged something or should i just send it to RWS to be inspected? Or is there no need? Thanks. |

| If it appears to be firing properly- I wouldn't get worked up about it. If indeed something was damaged, symptoms will appear soon. Dry firing is not a guarantee something will be damaged, and the lower the power of the gun in question, the less the chances dry-firing will cause an issue- so you may very well be A-Ok. |

| well ok...i cocked and shot it and it cocked ok and didnt make any odd noise but i did shoot a 2x4and it didnt go very deep in but who knows. The guns advertises 700fps but i realize that may not be true. if something was damaged how would i check? where is the seal that could have been smashed located? how do i replace it? |

| ok i went out back to do a quick makeshift shooting test. I shot a filled 2 liter bottle and a 2x4 and measured the depth of the shot. The pellet went clean through the 2 litter. Then when shooting the 2x4 the pellet penetrated exactly flush (im thinking thats like 1/8 an inch or so). I realize this isnt scientific but do ya think my gun is ok based on this? Thanks. |

Dont sweat it......I had a springer pistol that I dry fired a few hundred times(used the air blast to kill house flies) and it never did a thing.
People tend to think worse case senario.
If it was a magnum classed springer you might have issues......big spring=big slam |

The P5 is rated at around 450fps- no way it is/was getting anywhere near 700fps.
That being said, many guns don't approach the "maximum" they are rated for, so penetrating a plastic pop bottle and having it penetrate a 2"x4" flush is probably A-Ok for a .177 pistol. What distance were you shooting from? |

The 450fps is what it is advertised as with any of the online vendors, and I've never come across any spring-powered Handgun even approaching 700fps.
The paintball chronograph will work. I gather most manufacturers re-label some units as "paintball" specific because they put a splat guard in front and that sort of thing. The technology and principles for measuring paintballs, pellets or bullets is the same. |

I do see that Pyramyd has it listed at 700fps, but they also label it as a target pistol- the two of which (the power level vs. being a "target" pistol) don't really seem to go together.
Put it over the Chrony- I doubt you'll even get close to 700fps- I believe this is another case of extreme exaggeration in advertisement. |

ok chrono wouldnt work so no guesses on velocity but i did stand 20 yrds out from 55 gallon steel oil drum and shoot it about 5 times and it dippled the outside but didnt penetrate. Not sure if thats good or bad.
As far as pulling the piston and checking....i could prob do that if someone could tell me the directions to get to the internals and also tell mewhere to find a schematic. |

| i was reading about piston seals online and got a ?. The seal that gets damanged from dry firing is that the same seal that could wear out that people talk about replacing? Also....would dry firing the gun damage it to the point that you couldnt replace something in side to fix it cheap or could you do real irreversable and unrepairable damage to one? |

| The damage would be to the front of the piston ( front of piston is the seal ) .Dry firing could ruin the seal and the piston .Your p-5 has enough piston speed to damage the piston and seal .I have never seen a spring pistol hit 700 fps maybe 550 if your lucky |
